Room 324, Saturday Morning

Kate was a Prom Queen. That... had just come out of nowhere, and made her very giddy and happy for the rest of the evening. The cherry on top of an already fantastic senior prom night.

And Kate was still happy when she woke up on Saturday morning, oblivious to any obvious changes that had happened overnight. Sure, there were probably other interesting things in the room as well, but the first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was the tiara on the nightstand, and it wasn't more than half a minute until she'd grabbed it and perched it on top of her head before standing up on the bed and declaring, loudly, to no one in particular, "Imma queen!"

Really, she probably would've done that even if she had been about ten years older like she was supposed to be.

"Noooo," Kate whined as she followed him, tugging on his hand for emphasis. "Why so many rules? Pudding cups are way small! I'll just have li'l bit of ice cream!"

"That isn't a lot of rules!" Bod objected, shaking his head. "It's one rule that I'm putting into place so you don't feel sick later. It's for your own good."

"All the grownups always say that," Kate complained, making a face. "T's the only one who doesn't. I like her."

When she wasn't a bit scared of her, that was.

"You've met T already?" Bod asked, getting them down into the common room and heading for the refrigerator. "She's a friend of yours?"

[vanillajello]

"I guess," she replied idly, practically skipping on the way to the fridge. "She comes around sometimes and lets me have all the candy and ice cream and chocolate I want."

[therewaslife]

"Well, she shouldn't. You're lucky that you haven't gotten sick," Bod said, pulling out a carton of ice cream and showing it to her. Chocolate flavored, of course. "Now, you can have ice cream or you can pudding. Choose one."

"When I was tiiiny, T made me get a big hurt on my hand, so she has to give me candy now." That was how Kate saw it anyway. "I dun wanna decide, it's haaard."

[therewaslife]

"A big hurt?" Bod asked, forgetting about the ice cream momentarily. "How big?"

Kate waved a hand at him, half dismissively and half to show him the hand that had been hurt a few years previously.

"Biiig," she said. "I dun remember it, but Mommy says it was big. T left the iron on and thas why I'm not allowed to go near the iron anymore, cuz it burned and was hurty forever."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Bod said and eventually decided that they were having ice cream since she didn't want to choose. "Does it hurt anymore?"

[vanillajello]

"Nuh uh. But you can still kinda sorta see it."

She stuck her right hand towards him: if he looked closely, there was some faint scar tissue still on the edge of her palm, from a burn where the scab had kept splitting open because she'd still been crawling.

"But it don't hurt anymore."

[therewaslife]

"Good," he said, reaching out to rub a thumb over that scar before he smiled. "So, do you want to hold the ice cream while we head back to your room?"

[vanillajello]

"Yes!" And so, all past injuries were forgotten, and she was already reaching for the ice cream. "I am the best ice cream carrier ever."

[therewaslife]

"You are the best ice cream carrier ever," he said, gesturing her towards the door so she could toddle down to the room and he could make sure she didn't run away from her. "Are you going to share with me?"

"Are you gonna ask nicely?"

Well, she'd heard it herself enough to ask it when she was the one with the ice cream.

[therewaslife]

"Yes," he said, opening the door to her room and waiting for her to step inside. "We'll get you squared away with your ice cream and then I'll ask nicely, I promise."

[vanillajello]

"'Kay." She padded happily into the room, and went straight for her bed, because it was clearly the best place to sit and eat ice cream. "'S very polite to ask nicely."

[therewaslife]

"It is," he agreed, looking around for a bowl and spoon for her. "So, if you think that, why did you put up such a fight when I asked you to ask nicely?"

There seemed to be a bowl or two, plus spoons, on Kate's desk from when she hadn't bothered to take them back to the common room. She'd washed them, though.

Meanwhile, she was going to look at him like he was a big dummy. "Because I'm a queen!"

Also, the need to argue over ebverything was not exactly a recent development in her character.

Bod got to work scooping up the ice cream while he glanced over his shoulder at her. "And what if I'm a king?"

[vanillajello]

Kate laughed. "But you're not!"

[therewaslife]

"And how do you know?" Bod asked, walking over and handing her the bowl of ice cream. "I could be."

[vanillajello]

"Duh, you don't have a crown!" Kate pointed out, greedily taking the bowl from him. "What kinda king dun't have a crown?"

[therewaslife]

"Maybe I lost it," he said, settling down beside her. "I'm a little absentminded, you see. I think I left my crown in my room."

[vanillajello]

"You're lying," Kate decided. "Alice says it's impolite to lie."

She'd probably said something about talking with a mouth full of ice cream, too, but Kate was conveniently forgetting that right now.
