Party!!!, Overland Park, KS, Sunday FT

Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

This one wasn't someone Marshall readily recognized, when he came to the door.

"Hi," he said. "Kate's friend?"

It was both to check that he was a guest they were expecting, and to prompt him into giving his name if he was.

"Hi, I'm Jack," he confirmed. It was odd -- he'd heard a fair amount about Marshall, but never so much as said hello, he realized. "You're her brother? It's good to meet you."

"You too." Yeah, Marshall had heard quite a bit about Jack, too. It was weird to actually be face to face with the boy. Man. "Uh, welcome. I'm sure Kate's glad you could come."

"I can't believe I never have," Jack admitted. "It feels like this mythical land, Overland Park."

"It's not that interesting." At least now that their mom wasn't around... "Not for anyone from Fandom, at least. I'd guess."

Jack shrugged a little, moving to step inside the house. "Different worlds," he explained. "There isn't really a midwest where I'm from -- it was never properly colonized -- so anything here is new to me, even if it's not as bizarre as Fandom."

"Never colonized?" Marshall said as he stepped out of the way. He was mostly pondering that aloud than really asking. "Wow."

"My world took a left turn," Jack explained. (He'd gotten good at this explanation over the last two and a half years.) "Everyone has magic, Europeans couldn't win as easily, they mostly gave up at the Ohio. But other than that it's relatively normal." A pause. "... by Fandom standards."

"Which are not my standards," Marshall concluded, wryly. He did a pretty good job of not staring at any of that. He'd been at his sister's graduation, after all. "Got it."
