Party!!!, Overland Park, KS, Sunday FT

Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

Hannibal still wasn't sure about this but after meeting Marshall at the door, he'd come further into the house and was now idly wandering about, taking everything in.

"Hey," Hannibal said, catching her against him and laughing a bit. "I got your message. Figured I should drop in and see how things were going."

"Awesome," Kate said utterly sincere and clinging to him. "I didn't expect you to show up, you weirdo hermit. I love that you did."

"What can I say, I'm full of surprises," Hannibal said, laughing a bit. "And I didn't decide until the last minute either. Sorry I didn't RSVP."

"It's okay, this isn't that formal a shindig, anyway," Kate snickered, shaking her head. "There are enough snacks. Moosh has been making a bunch."

"What's the occasion, anyway?" Hannibal asked. "Cat's away the mice will play?"

"Pretty much," she confirmed cheerfully. "Parents are gonna be away for a few months, and my aunt's family just left for Houston for a while. Seemed like a good time to invite people over."

"Just you and your brother in the house alone?" Hannibal asked. "I can see why it'd get lonely."

"Well, me, Moosh, and Bod," Kate replied, nodding towards said pale fellow. "So... Not so much lonely, but this place is pretty isolated."

"Well, technically he lives in Fandom," Kate tried. "... He just only goes back there when he has to."

It'd been a while since she'd seen, or even spoken to him, so maybe this was normal now, but she'd wind her way over to tease all the same. Normal greetings were for people she didn't know quite so well.

"I thought it was about time I saw some of the outside world again," Hannibal said, giving her a slight smile. "Hey there."

"Hey." The greeting was returned with a smile and Angela spread her arms to at least get a hug. She was allowed one of those these days, right? It had all become a little difficult over the last year or so, but that she thought she could still count on.

"I'm glad. It's good to see you, can we not leave it quite so long next time?" It felt like a really, really long time.

"Yeah, you know, I'm doing my best," Hannibal said, stepping forward so he could embrace her. "It's been...messy but I think I'm getting there. Soon, I'm sure I'll remember how to use a phone like a regular person."

"If it helps, I'm back in the country as of... well, now." Several thousand miles closer made keeping in contact with other people that much easier. "No more weird phone numbers and time differences." There were still different universes to content with, but still.

"No more France?" Hannibal asked, sounding a little surprised. "Thought that was your kinda town."

"Oh, don't get me wrong, I love it there." Paris was all kinds of her sort of city. "But it was only ever a temporary deal, for the school year. It's not like I was running off forever." Tempting as that might have been.

"It does feel like it was over really fast."

"What're you gonna do now?" Hannibal asked curiously. "School over and done with?"

"For the summer, and my plans for that are still in progress." Progress that mostly involved waiting. Lots of waiting. "But maybe back in Fandom for a couple of months. If they want me."

"I'm ninety percent sure I can talk my tutor round on workshop running being extra credit worthy." There was an easy ride for next year right there. "And they pay you for it." All good things.

"Back in Fandom?" Hannibal asked, surprised. "To teach?"

"Maybe," Angela repeated. Just to make sure that part had stuck. "Try not to sound too shocked at the level of responsibility," she joked. "They may yet decide I'm unfit to mold the minds of next generation." Who were all of three years younger than her.

"In which case I'm running away with a circus for the summer."

"I can't see how they wouldn't want you back," Hannibal said with a laugh. "What would you teach?"
