Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

"There was a paintball war on the island last night," Eric said. "I'm not helping to clean up."

Kate tsked him. "Come on, you were supposed to say I'm such a super special Kansan that it doesn't matter that the state is shitty and boring."

"That too," Eric added belatedly.

"Mm." Kate smirked up at him. "Well, whether that's true or not, I'm glad you came, since there's at least one fucked up universe where we're supposed to be friendly."

She'd take that part, but leave Mitchell dying out of it if at all possible.

"And sorry if my guestlist makes you feel old."

Eric waved it off. "I'm used to it. People my age are hard to come by."

"Well, most of you tend to be dead." Cheery thought, there. Also. "... Some just more mobile than others. But that's rare in these parts of the multiverse."

"True," Eric said. "I think I freaked your door guy a bit."

"Yeeeah, that's my little brother."

Poor Marshall.

"Moosh is kinda not used to the whole... Fandom thing."

"It takes some time," Eric said. "Last week everyone had to pretend to be normal. Apparently normal people enjoy polyblend and shitty music."

"Yeah, I heard." And she was not at all bummed it hadn't happened while she'd still been a student. "Though, for someone who's lived for so long, you'd think you'd have a pretty high tolerance for both."

"I had my fill decades ago," Eric said.

"So..."

Kate paused to ponder the implications of that.

"Does that mean somewhere in the world there might be evidence of you in polyblend?"

She thought this was a logical question!

There was a long pause.

Finally: "...no?"

Kate... Kate was going to laugh a lot right now.

"Oh, man," she said, "if I had the money for private detectives, I would hire them just for that."

She was so respectful.

"You are a terrible person," he said shaking a finger at her.

It was probably why they got along so well.

Kate gave him her most adorable grin.

"Yes, that's common knowledge," she said. "And you still came to my party."

So, yes, it probably had a lot to do with why they meshed.
