Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

"Why did I choose to spend four years in a place where I have to room with people who snore and leave food under their beds again?" This sounded like the better plan right now.

"Probably because you wanted to go to college," Kate pointed out, oh so helpfully, with a little smirk. "Whereas I chose to become a flight attendant."

"I think I've changed my mind. Do you get holidays out of that?" She was mostly kidding, but after ten months living with her last roommate, the idea would've been tempting towards the end.

Snort. "You do, but the pay isn't great, and a lot of the passengers are annoying."

"... I think I'm spoiled by portal travel," Angela admitted. "It's been a while since I've had to sit several hours behind someone with their chair right back or who won't quit telling me about their fifty prize poodles."

It happened, she knew.

"Okay, they still lose your luggage sometimes, and occasionally drop you in Warsaw when you wanted Washington... Nightmare, by the way. Polish is not a language I get along with." The words were long and there were lots of z's and k's.

"Ugh, yeah." Oh, Portalocity. At least SkyKans couldn't throw you into differnet worlds. "I mean, I haven't been dropped in Poland, but I did once spend like six hours on a layover in Montreal. Not where I was going in the slightest."

"Yeah, the Poland thing was when they were having that trouble last year. I don't think that's a normal problem." At least, she hoped not, because she liked a holiday as much as the next girl, but she preferred it when they were planned.

"And I was traveling from France, so not as far out of the way as if I'd been over here somewhere..."

Kate wrinkled her nose at Portalocity's trouble last year. Ugh, she was so lucky she'd missed that entirely. Some benefits to being in a universe that liked moving its time in weird ways in relation to others.

"Yeah, that still makes a little bit of sense," she agreed with a little nod. "Bane of our multiversal existence, still."

"But hey, people seem to have made it here." For a group of people scattered across several different worlds and countries, they managed to find their way to a party.

"The one place portals can find no trouble is in the middle of Kansas."

"Apparently so," Kate had to admit. And she had never really had any trouble with portal service from home.

She tilted her head a bit. "So you mentioned moving, does that mean you're like gonna come back to the States for good, or...?"

"I don't know about for good, for good." Because dirty roommate aside Paris was amazing and completely her sort of city, so she might go back one day. "But I was only out there for nine months to study. I had to come back eventually."

Now was that time. "So yeah, Stateside for the time being. It's a little less exotic, but-- Nice to be home. Though I will miss being old enough not to get carded."

"Ah, Europe." Kate had fond memories of different drinking ages, yes.

Not that it had stopped her acquiring drinks for this shindig, mind. "Welcome back and everything. Sorry for the potential culture shock of Paris to Overland Park."

"Oh, I don't know, this place is kind of adorable." Or, it seemed it from what she'd seen. "There's not some seedy suburban underbelly we're not seeing, is there?"
