Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

"Hey, Jack," Mitchell said, raising his bottle to him in salute. Once he'd seemed done with what he'd been doing, at least.

Jack blinked a little, like someone coming out of a daydream,. and raised the remnants of something that had once been poisonous and green right back at Mitchell. "Hi," he returned. "This place is almost bizarrely normal, isn't it?"

"It's exactly what you'd expect of Kansas," Mitchell said. "I can't believe Eric's here."

Jack glanced over to the blond. "It is a bit like a zebra in the room, isn't it?" he agreed. "I haven't said hello to him, not since -- well before the accident."

"The big, Swedish, ancient zebra in the room," Mitchell agreed. He took another glance over towards Eric, then shook his head. "Well, he's still... Eric. You know, if you were thinking about talking to him."

"It'd just be weird," Jack mused. "'Hi, I know I haven't talked to you since my girlfriend worked for you last summer, by the way I'm your mortal enemy now. Want a terrible green drink?'"

He frowned. "Probably I should be polite."

"He probably won't bite," said Mitchell.

He should probably not sound that cheerful about it.

"... not that I'd exactly mind if he did," Jack blurted without thinking about it much.

"You'd probably poison him," Mitchell said, then paused. "Wait."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "I don't actually charge off after everyone I find attractive."

No matter what Certain Parties named Sebastien thought.

"Hey, I didn't say that," Mitchell said, holding up his hands. "Though you could pick worse in the sack."

Mitchell, that was information Jack didn't need.

Really not, as now Jack had to try very hard not to start staring at Eric as if he were the last chocolate in the box and Jack had just gone on a diet.

He shook his head. "Well, a thousand years of practice is good for some things." Which was also probably an overshare. "But I think we can both keep our teeth to ourselves."

Dammit.

Mitchell shrugged. "Either way," he segued, "How have you been? Biting aside."

Unless either of them blundered straight back into an overshare. Really, it was almost a pity Bo hadn't made it today.

Jack ran a hand through his hair. "Good, biting aside," he said. "Emma and I had triplets last time the island came up with imaginary children, and somehow that led to us deciding to make another go of things."

he was happier about that than he was letting on; he was just trying to be realistic.

"And I have a little house and a job answering phones that bores me out of my skull, so I suppose the rest of my life is as well as one might expect. I should go back to school."

"That sounds..." Mitchell reached out to pat Jack on the shoulder, if he'd let him. "Very domestic."

You know. For Jack's standards.

"But hey, congratulations."

"Thanks," Jack said dryly, because it was all hideously domestic for him. "Do I get some credit for having missed Seder a few weeks ago because I was busy being a wolf? And how's Wales?"

"Good," Mitchell said. "Quiet." Sometimes involving bouts of attempting to track down Daisy. "Sometimes Bo wafts in with Fandom crazy in her wake, but nothing I can't handle."

Ahem.

"I've stayed mostly clear of the crazy," Jack mused. "... not counting the triplets, but I know to expect that one now. What's going on?"

"Last thing I heard, there was another week that sent everyone tangling the sheets," Mitchell said. "I'm not all that in the loop. Though I think I heard something about a school board visit a while ago."

Or last week.
