Party!!!, Overland Park, KS, Sunday FT

Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

[Minor OCD coming up! And like I said in the invite, come one and all!]

"Looks that way," Kate said, shrugging. Still smiling. "I mean, he's still half living in Fandom but mostly? He's here."

And that made her happier than she cared to say.

"Well, that bit's a little fuzzy," she admitted with another easy shrug. "I mean, I know he wants to travel after graduation, but probably not immediately? And I'm gonna be stuck here for a few months, at least. But we're not, like, intending to break up or anything any time soon."

"You'll have loads of time for that," said Mitchell, mollified. "How's the job?"

"Job-like." How descriptive was that? "Most passengers continue to be okay, and some are horrendous assholes. You know. The usual."

Kate gave him a look. It didn't manage to be too sharp. "Not unless the pilot takes a really wrong turn somewhere."

"Might be time to switch airlines," Mitchell said, taking a swig of his beer. "It's too bad PanAm went out of business."

"Please, if I was doing international flights, you'd just be cracking different kinds of jokes than you are now. Makes no difference."

"Hey, you could at least make a stop-over in Wales every now and again," Mitchell said, grinning. "Doesn't Portalocity have anything remotely flight attendant-y?"

Shrug. "I haven't tried to find out." Though the thought had crossed her mind, previously. For the future. "I think they're more about... check-in crew and stuff. You generally don't need anyone holding your hand or serving refreshments on a portal trip."

"How did you wind up at Fandom anyway?" Mitchell asked. "No offense, but your Kansas is kind of... Kansas..."

Kate looked amused. "Well, I didn't know Fandom was gonna be Fandom." Also pretty self-explanatory. "But I just wanted to get out of here, you know? My first plan was to just get my GED and graduate early but then I kinda came across a leaflet for Fandom."

And got pulled into Oz, metaphorically.

Mitchell shook his head. "I just don't understand how worlds that don't officially have Portalocity work everything," he admitted. "At least with us, it's something that's been passed around, you know?"

"Uh, you remember that when I first came to Fandom, I took a plane to Baltimore and then a shuttle to Fandom, right?" Kate checked. "I mean, there are actually tiny Portalocity lounges at some of the airports here if you know where to look, but, y'know, just regular travel is an option too."

"How did you end up in Fandom, anyway?" Kate wondered. "Random portal just open up in front of your pink house or...?"

"I decided to send George here back when he was still a kid," Mitchell said, shrugging. "Fandom isn't unknown to my people."

"Yeah, Kansas at a party with two vampires in attendance," Kate pointed out. "Plus someone who used to be one. And two people who were raised by them."

... Wow her friends were fucked up.
