Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

"Except maybe the first timers," Mitchell commented.

"Well, I didn't need that on my first portal trip."

Whenever that had been.

"Guess I'm just made of stronger stuff."

And smugness.

"How did you wind up at Fandom anyway?" Mitchell asked. "No offense, but your Kansas is kind of... Kansas..."

Ergo normal.

Kate looked amused. "Well, I didn't know Fandom was gonna be Fandom." Also pretty self-explanatory. "But I just wanted to get out of here, you know? My first plan was to just get my GED and graduate early but then I kinda came across a leaflet for Fandom."

And got pulled into Oz, metaphorically.

Mitchell shook his head. "I just don't understand how worlds that don't officially have Portalocity work everything," he admitted. "At least with us, it's something that's been passed around, you know?"

"Uh, you remember that when I first came to Fandom, I took a plane to Baltimore and then a shuttle to Fandom, right?" Kate checked. "I mean, there are actually tiny Portalocity lounges at some of the airports here if you know where to look, but, y'know, just regular travel is an option too."

Mitchell held his hands up. "Hey, I'm not an expert on interdimensional travel," he said. "Didn't know that."

"How did you end up in Fandom, anyway?" Kate wondered. "Random portal just open up in front of your pink house or...?"

"I decided to send George here back when he was still a kid," Mitchell said, shrugging. "Fandom isn't unknown to my people."

"'My people'," Kate aped, though in a good-natured manner. Well, good-natured for them. "Sounds pretentious."

"I can't say vampires out here," said Mitchell. "It's Kansas."

"Yeah, Kansas at a party with two vampires in attendance," Kate pointed out. "Plus someone who used to be one. And two people who were raised by them."

... Wow her friends were fucked up.

"It's still Kansas," Mitchell pointed out right back, looking amused. "I mean. I keep waiting for some hay to blow past us."

"Hey, at least we're in the suburbs!" Kate retorted. "We're practically in Kansas City. Besides, you live in Wales."

"It's wetter and we have better beer!"

"Yeah, and people talk funny and it's barely ever warm."

Or something. She'd only been there once.

"Rain builds character," Mitchell insisted.

"Uh huh."

He couldn't possibly believe that.

"No it doesn't."

"You don't know," Mitchell said. "You're a teenager. You don't know anything."

Yeah, Kate was going to wrinkle her nose at that.

"Hurtful. I know a fair bit more than most teenagers."
