Room 324, Friday Afternoon

Kate was a mess. A little bit. In a vague, numb way. Not that she would be showing that to people.

It had been a pretty long week; filled with thinking she was insane, and Christmas shopping, and talking about ballet, and theater, and people unexplainably falling madly in love, and sleeping with several blankets and wearing many many layers because her roommate was making their room cold.

Despite having made two separate trips to the mainland within a week, a part of her wanted to just follow Jack’s lead and get the hell off the island for the weekend. But it was only a week until she’d go back to Kansas for Christmas. Might as well stick it out on the island until then. There was a party on Sunday and everything.

And now she’d found a bunch of photos she’d forgotten about on her computer. They were from the spring, and featured a lot of people she hadn't seen or talked to in a while. Her girlfriends back in Kansas (and such awesome friends they were, having lost contact with her pretty much straight after she moved to Fandom), people from school, Gene, Benjamin. Seemed like half a lifetime away.

She looked at the pictures, comparing her life then to her life now. Deciding which was better wasn't an easy thing to do.

"It doesn't concern you."

"You don't trust me?" Leto replied teasingly.

"Not what I said," Kate said, poking his shoulder.

[future_sandworm]

"No, but it's not an unreasonable assumption to draw."

"Trusting someone doesn't necessarily mean telling them everything."

[future_sandworm]

"I know." He grinned. "And it's hard to make you feel guilty."

"Obviously. I don't bother with guilt," she chuckled. "Only when I've done something wrong, and that's rare."

"Very sensible." He leaned back on the bed.

Kate picked up her computer and reached to slide it onto her desk. She'd accidentally pushed it off the bed a couple of times while distracted, and Leto was a huge distraction. It was best to be sensible about this, too.

"So, how was your week?"

[future_sandworm]

Oh, he knew he was, especially when he wanted to be.

"Quiet, apart from some people acting odd this weekend. But this being Fandom, it could almost count as normal."

"You got an almost normal week? I hate you," she informed him, laying herself down next to him on the bed.

He rolled over on his side to look at Kate. "You do? Should I be flattered?" Oh, and there was a smug grin.

Kate reached to brush a fingertip against his bottom lip. "I don't know why you would be, but sure, if you feel like it," she snorted.

"Inspiring strong feelings, whether love or hate, is always an accomplishment," Leto suggested, then attempted to bite her finger.

"You might have a point."

She pulled her finger to safety, then went to poke him on the nose instead. "I'm not food."

"I didn't say you were."

[vanillajello]

"I didn't say you said I was." This could go on forever. "Just pointing it out. Someone thought I was, last weekend."

"They did? Would asking who or why clarify?" Leto asked.

[vanillajello]

"He thought he was a vampire."

Kate said it like it was no big deal, and really, it wasn't. But hearing about it after the fact had still made her uneasy, temporary random Fandom weirdness or not.

Leto remembered well Kate's reaction to learning about the alternate reality where they both had been vampires. He guessed changing the subject slightly might be a good idea.

"In the same way Triela thought that offering me intimate services in return for information was perfectly normal?"

It was definitely not the worst idea he'd ever had.

She couldn't help being amused. And a little disbelieving. "...Wait, what?"

[future_sandworm]

"Triela, dressed in a skirt and high heels, offered intimate services in return for information," he repeated with a grin. "I felt obliged to rescue her from embarrassing herself further."

Kate was so not above finding other people's embarrassment funny. So she laughed.

"How chivalrous of you," she chuckled. "Poor Triela."

"I offered her to read me romantic poetry all night," he clarified. "She was herself in the morning."

There was a random wave of mixed emotions at that. Kate pushed them back, and concentrated on what was important here.

"And pissed off?" she asked, smirking.
