Outside Jelly Bean Cabin, Tuesday Afternoon

It had been a weird weekend, and the weirdness was still leaking into Kate's week now. Even with her truly awesome skills of repression, getting the best possible friend and losing him in the span of three days was not easy to take.

So, Kate looked for distractions. And right now, she was finding one in sitting on the front steps of her cabin with her laptop.

Catching up on her online coursework. French, to be exact.

The world should be afraid.

A jelly bean arced through the air toward her laptop. It clearly came from nowhere.

And that rustling sound from around the corner was probably nothing to worry about.

Well, that was a good way to startle Kate. The jelly bean bounced off the keyboard. "What the...?"

Yeah, the corner with the sound effects was now being eyed warily.

If Kate were watching, she'd see a hand appear around the corner to toss another jelly bean. Except that since it was just a hand, the aim was... off to say the least.

Kate watched it land a few feet away from the steps, then looked towards the corner again.

"You know, I could totally see your hand just now."

[weldedtomyspine]

"No you couldn't."

Because that was a good way to keep stealthy.

He was a total ninja. Spy material. Really.

"I can also hear you."

[weldedtomyspine]

"It's just your imagination," the 'mysterious voice' assured her. "You must be going crazy."

[vanillajello]

"Yeah, I can still hear you," she replied. "Pretty sure I even know who you are."

[weldedtomyspine]

"A mysterious ghost?" the voice suggested. Very convincingly.

[vanillajello]

"More like Jaime Reyes, dorky bane of the third floor."

Come on. Who else ever threw candy at her?

"I don't know this Reyes person," the voice insisted. "But he sounds devilishly handsome."

[vanillajello]

"He sounds like he's interfering with my important school work," Kate retorted. "That's what he sounds like."

[weldedtomyspine]

"Just by existing and being so devilishly handsome that you keep daydreaming about him, I bet."

Uh huh. That was totally what was going on.

Kate rolled her eyes. Didn't matter that he couldn't see it, the thought was still there.

"I have a boyfriend for all that stuff, sorry."

[weldedtomyspine]

"Is he as handsome as this Jaime guy you mentioned?" the mysterious voice asked, its town most definitely teasing.

Like Jaime didn't already know Kate's answer to that particular question.

"Way hotter than you."

So predictable.

[weldedtomyspine]

He'd seen that answer coming.

"Not me. I'm just a figment of your imagination, remember?"

[vanillajello]

"No, you're not," Kate sighed. "You're Jaime."

[weldedtomyspine]

"How can you be sure? After all, if you were crazy you'd probably think I was real..."

Best argument ever? Or best argument ever?

Kate had a pretty good one, too.

"If I was crazy I don't think I'd be starting to get bored with this little game of yours."

That called for more jelly beans to be lobbed from nowhere anyone could see. Unless they were still looking toward the corner.

Which kate was. When she wasn't trying to shield herself from jelly beans that... Okay, weren't actually hitting her at all.

"Cut it out, Jaime."

[weldedtomyspine]

There was a long pause. Not because Jaime was running around to the other side of the cabin, of course. He just happened to be wandering by.

Ignore the fact that he was slightly out of breath.

"Oh, hey, Kate. What's up?"

[vanillajello]

"Ha ha. You're so stealthy and funny, Jaime." Oh look, another one of those eyerolls. She readjusted the position of the computer on her lap. "Online classes. French."

[weldedtomyspine]

"Too bad it's not something I can actually help with," Jaime grinned wryly. "Unless you need some study fuel?" He held up a bag of jelly beans.

Which was a big help with is already-blown cover.
