Spencer's Beach, Hawaii, Saturday

It was (supposed to be) Kate and Bod's last morning in Hawaii. They both had jobs to get back to, books and movies to take care of. But not quite yet, and what better way was there to cling to the vacation than the head out to a gorgeous beach one last time? None. No better way. So that was what they were doing.

But hard as Kate tried, her mind wasn't entirely off the impending, inevitable return to the dreary island where she'd punched someone and videos of her former mistakes were all over the internet. It was already in her head. She'd been ignoring her phone and her laptop most of the week, but today, already anticipating her return to the real world, she finally checked her messages.

There was a single voicemail, and she listened to it. And while she listened to it, her eyebrows knitted into a frown.

And when she listened to it again, that frown did nothing but deepen.

"I know but I was subtle," he said, offering her his arm so they could go back to the cottage. "I thought I was, at least."

"Subtlety doesn't fool me." And maybe she'd been expecting him to check her out, even. She linked her arm with his. "Anyway, we're leaving to have sex. I think it was unavoidable."

Bod laughed and knew that blush was just going to stay on his cheeks until they got back to the cottage. "Are you going to tell our fellow beach goers why we're leaving?"

"Oh, dearest Nobody," Kate drawled, looking amused at him. "I think anyone who saw us making out in the water has already figured that out."

Bod looked down shyly and laughed. "You make it sound like so many people were paying attention to us in the water there."

[vanillajello]

"They might have been!" Kate claimed, and laughed. "We're a very attractive couple. And you were hitching my leg up around your waist."

[therewaslife]

"I just wanted to be closer to you," Bod said, getting close to being as red as he'd ever been. "You let me!"

[vanillajello]

"Yes, and then I suggested leaving," Kate pointed out. "I didn't say it was a bad thing."

[therewaslife]

"You're awful," Bod said and rubbed one of his cheeks. "I'm never going to get rid of this blush. I think it's become permanent."

[vanillajello]

"I find that unlikely," she said, shaking her head. "But it's cute. And it'd remind you of me if it was permanent."

[therewaslife]

"You're biased," he said and could already feel the blush and the warmth on his cheeks fading. "Perhaps I'll be saved from being permanently red faced and hot."

"You know, I'm gonna ban you from referring to my bias if you don't stop using it against me," Kate said, jokingly. "My bias does not discredit my opinions, dude."

"You can't ban me!" Bod exclaimed, laughing. "I wouldn't listen to you anyway. I would keep using it to try and discredit your opinions. Dude."

Kate couldn't help laughing quite a bit at that. "That just sounds weird and wrong, coming from you."

[therewaslife]

"I know, it felt wrong as well," he replied, making a face. "I don't think I'm supposed to be using that word. I think I should be leaving it to those who know how to use it."

[vanillajello]

"There are a few words like that," she replied, giving his side a little nudge as they walked. "Some words are just not very you."

[therewaslife]

"And yet, you sometimes make me say them anyway," Bod said, laughing. "I think you enjoy that out of me."

[vanillajello]

"Well, what's not to enjoy?" Kate wondered. "I like words, you know. And when you say some of them it's amusing, because you don't always know what to do with them."

[therewaslife]

"So, what's a word you're hoping I'll say one day?" Bod wondered, moving to slide his arm around her shoulders to walk closer to her.

[vanillajello]

"I haven't actually thought about it like that," Kate replied as she slid her own arm around his waist. She was pondering it now, though. "I don't know if there is a single word like that."

[therewaslife]

"Nothing comes to mind?" Bod asked, sounding almost surprised. "I thought you would have thought about it once or twice."

[vanillajello]

"Well, I think about a lot of things," she chuckled. "My head's a very busy place. And I think I've already made you say a lot of the dirty words."

[therewaslife]

"You have, indeed," Bod admitted with a little laugh. "Of course, making me say them is very different from me having a handle on them. I can't see how just saying them is any fun when I sound so...strange."

"But that is the fun!" She wasn't expecting him to understand that. "You just need to accept that watching you struggle is fun for me."

"But why?" Bod asked, finally seeing the cottage come into view. "I don't understand that."
