Marshall was at school, Bod had been sent on errands, and Kate had the day off. She was using it productively – no, really! – by looking at ads for apartments for rent in the general Kansas City area. And kind of daydreaming about the swankier ones while she circled some of the cheaper places to show to Bod, later.

Also, she was eating candy. But mostly that apartment hunt thing!

"Remember to buy an upscale sofa," Mitchell said. He went easily into the living room, tossing the bag onto the coffee table.

Kate followed him and flopped down on the sofa there (not particularly upscale, but nice enough), patting the space beside her.

"What, you don't think our friends like sleeping on the floor?"

Mitchell sank down on the sofa next to her. "Nope," he said cheerfully. "If I have to take the floor, I'll chase you out of bed."

"I don't know, Bod might complain about that," Kate joked, then shook her head. "So what's new? I haven't seen you in ages."

Including that horrible week in Fandom, but that didn't seem like the best thing to lead with.

Mitchell shrugged, pulling out the terrible DVD - something about angry ghost gnomes in Japan - and putting it down on the table. "I'm employed again, that's about it," he said. "Heard Fandom's up to its old tricks again."

"Ugh, yes," Kate said, rolling her eyes like she hadn't spent a day crying all over Bod after it'd been over. "I take it you missed that."

"Wasn't around," Mitchell said. "I think I was mopping up sick all that week."

"Well, you were better off, trust me," she sighed, reaching for the dvd case to give it a look. "My boyfriend was dead and I was a little crazy. On the plus side, I was pretty badass."

"Yeah?" Mitchell asked, a vague little smile on his lips.

Look, 'Kate being awesome' was a better conversational topic than 'Bod being dead'.

"Well, in a deranged, 'nothing to lose' kind of way," Kate shrugged. "But yeah. I still had Luke, so I still had some self-defence skills."

[chosehumanity]

"I always knew you'd handle the pink apocalypse well," Mitchell said, a joking edge to his tone. "Did you take anyone out with a cricket bat?"

He was trying not to let this go too heavy.
