Kansas City, MO, Sunday Morning

Christmas had come and gone. So had Marshall who'd joined the holiday festivities (and stayed at Kate and Bod's place) for a week or so, but was already back on the eastern coast. His friends wanted him for New Year's. Charmaine, Neil and Wheels where intending to spend the turn of the year with Tara and Max since they'd been in no rush to get back to Texas after Christmas. And Kate had no idea what her personal plans were.

So she was obviously devoting a lot of thought to that right now.

Or, you know. She was sitting in her pajamas on the couch, eating Twizzlers for breakfast while playing video games. In deep thought.

"Is that your breakfast?" asked Bod as he came out of the bedroom, fresh from a shower. "Please tell me that's not your breakfast."

"This is... not my breakfast?"

That would have maybe sounded better not mumbled around a Twizzler. But she did her best to look adorable, in case that helped something.

Because it was totally her breakfast.

"I would have cooked you something better than a Twizzler, Kate," Bod said, shaking his head. "I would have even gone out to fetch you something if you wanted something unhealthy. Candy?"

He laughed and ran his fingers through his wet hair. "Your stomach has to be made of iron."

"You've known me for like almost three years," Kate pointed out. After chewing, this time. "Is this supposed to be news to you now or something?"

"It wasn't meant to be a revelation," he said, taking a seat beside her, eyes going to her video game. "Just an observation. I know how strong your stomach is."

[vanillajello]

"Then don't judge my breakfast." Or something. "I know what I'm doing, I've built up an amazing candy tolerance over the holidays –– aww, goddamn Psychos sneaking up on me again!"

That last bit was directed at the game, yes.

"What are you playing?" Bod asked, settling his hand on the back of her neck and stroking his fingers there lightly.

Kate shivered, but at least she didn't complain about that being a distraction. "Meta for Borderlands 2," she said. "Though the bette way to phrase that would've been what am I dying in, 'cause that's what keeps happening. Shouldn't have put the difficulty on hard but I wanted better loot."

"Doesn't dying pretty much cancel out getting better loot because you're dying too much to receive the bounty?" Bod inquired.

[vanillajello]

"No, 'cause you respawn and you can go back to grab the loot," she explained. "But it's still pretty annoying, though."

[therewaslife]

"I understand none of this," he chuckled, keeping his hand on her neck for a few more seconds before sliding it away and reaching for his book on the nearby table. "Perhaps I'll just read and listen to the wonderful sounds of video game violence."

"Mmhmmm, I'm sure it's very soothing for your bookworm ears." Some of the bad guys quoted Shakespeare, if nothing else? "Nerd."

Bod opened his book and chuckled. "Sloth."

"Hey, sloths are totally cute!"

So, she was going to look smug about that, thank you very much.

"And you are totally cute too, dearest," Bod joked, shaking his head. "And you're very, very aware of that."

[vanillajello]

"Well duh. I'm amazing, of course I've noticed." Still dying in her game, though. "Face included."

[therewaslife]

"You're ability to be humble amazes me," he laughed, eyes scanning his book easily even while he talked. "You truly are amazing."

Even if she was dying in her game.

"I'm so amazing, I'm not even letting you read properly." Of course, she did that all the time. "So lucky to have me. You're so lucky."

"Oh, I'm very lucky," he said and although his tone was amused, he said that sincerely. "I wouldn't want anyone else but you, Kate, even if you do distract me from reading sometimes."

"All the time." She was horribly needy with attention sometimes, see. And then her character died again. "Ugh, it's too early in the morning to be dead this often."

It was actually not that early at all.

"Practice makes perfect," he chuckled, peeking up at the newest death for her character. "I'm sure you'll cease dying...eventually."

"But I don't wanna," Kate sighed, slumping back against his side. Just a little theatrical. "I want awesome guns with little effort, is that so much to ask?"

"I think it might be," Bod said, smiling. "There are very few things in life that are easy. You should know that by now."

[vanillajello]

Kate snorted, glancing up at him. "Wait, are you trying to turn this into a life lesson?"

[therewaslife]

He hadn't been doing that intentionally but he could see how it could be construed that way.

"Of course I was," he said, nodding. "Everything can be a life lesson."
