Overland Park, KS, Saturday Afternoon

"So, you think there's any point to this?"

Kate's question threw Marshall for a loop for a moment. She was sitting on her bed, while he sat on the floor, leaning his back against the bed; they'd just been going over the latest lamenesses of Butterworth Senior High when Kate had decided to change the subject.

"Huh?" he asked, intelligently, turning his head to look at her.

"The new meds?" Kate clarified, shifting. She ended up on her stomach, propping herself up on her elbows, her cellphone in her hands. "Like, I thought we were over this already."

Their parents had meant to tell them on Friday. That... hadn't worked out. Tara had freaked over the gremlin bite scar on Kate's arm, and no amount of look, I got bitten by a dog months ago, I told you, remember? had stopped the inevitable.

The 'inevitable' in this case meaning Buck emerging to spend the rest of the day with them.

But Saturday morning, Tara had been back. And after she had stopped gushing about how nice it was to have everyone there for breakfast at the same time – just like old times, wasn't it wonderful? – they'd eventually gotten to the point.

So, over pancakes, Kate and Marshall had been told that their mother was going back on meds.

... Hooray. Or something.

"At least they said they're different ones this time," Marshall tried. "Maybe it's gonna go okay."

"She's gonna go zombie again," Kate said, pressing some buttons on her phone. "That, or they just won't work at all."

Her brother's eyes flicked to her hands, then back to her again. "Someone you wanna call?"

Kate's turn to be startled. "... Not really."

"A guy, maybe?"

Actually, she'd been considering bothering Mitchell. And he didn't count. "No."

"You know, T said you talked about some guy." He cut her off before she got further than the beginning of an L. "Not Leto. Someone else."

"I didn't."

Marshall smiled knowingly, which made her roll her eyes at him, which made him shake his head. "You might not want to tell Mom about your multiple boyfriends."

"Mooshmallow, Mom is the only multiple thing around here," Kate replied, deceptively idly. "'Sides, I'm smarter than that. Now, shut the fuck up and remind me about the many, many reasons why I no longer go to your shitty school."

"I can't actually shut up and tell you--"

"Mooosh." She reached to slap the back of his head.

"Ow. Fine, keep your sordid affairs a secret," he said, rubbing the spot she'd hit. "Glad to see you haven't changed."

"I'm too awesome to change," Kate said, smirking smugly. "Now. Lame school, asshole students, gory details. Go."
