Normal weekends were weird. Kate knew that was a thought that didn't make much sense at first glance. She didn't care. It was still true.

Not that the Gregsons usually spent their weekend debating paint colors, or packing stuff up and moving it around the house to paint rooms. But they were just... They were all acting normal. Like a normal family. Joking and laughing as they did stuff. It wasn't the first or the only time Kate had felt that by any means, because they were generally a happier family than people (Kate herself included) gave them credit for, but still. Weird.

So Kate was taking a break, by closing the doors to her room and flopping down on her bed, and not really thinking about anything at all. Thinking would only lead to either thoughts of what Mitchell had told her yesterday, or wondering just how long this no mental illness thing would last.

And that was not what taking a break was all about.

Bod had said he'd call and, with some time to himself, he was doing just that. He still didn't feel all the way settled after yesterday but he felt better.

So, he dialed the number and held his phone to his ear while moving to stretch out on his bed. At least he wasn't on the floor this time, right? He did have books in bed with him so maybe that made up for it.

Kate made a frustrated little noise at the phone when it came to life on her nightstand and interrupted her not-thoughts. Still, she reached for it, blindly, not bothering to move at all.

Her attitude got better when she saw who was calling, though, and there was a slight smile on her face and in her voice when she picked up the call and clamped the phone to her ear.

"Heeey. Missing me?"

"I don't know," he said, smiling just at hearing her voice, "should I be?"

"Yes. Yes you should," she decided. "Definitely."

"All right. Then yes, I am missing you." Of course he was missing her. "How are you doing there?"

"I have paint on my clothes," she shared. "So, kinda as expected. You?"

[therewaslife]

"Fine," he said absently, shrugging a shoulder. "It's been less warm here. I was outside most of yesterday."

"Do anything interesting?" She was betting on boring books, really. "No weirdness going on?"

[therewaslife]

"I bought a few books," he said, confirming her suspicion. "I went to the local graveyard for awhile and then spent some time by the lake. There's no weirdness, no. It's quiet."

"Aww, and I was so hoping I might escape some freaky business by conveniently being off the island."

Of course, she knew the weirdness could follow her home. But if she'd thought about that too much, she would've just gone completely insane.

"If there's something strange going on, I've missed it," he said and shrugged a shoulder slightly. "Is the redecoration progressing well?"

[vanillajello]

"Eh, I can't really figure out what color I want my room to be," she replied, shrugging. "But we don't have to do that this weekend anyway, so... Other than that, it's going fine."

Bod nodded and idly tapped out some erratic rhythm against his hip. "How's your family?"

[vanillajello]

"Fine. Normal." Something like that, anyway. She paused, pursed her lips, let out a quiet laugh. "Really normal, actually."

[therewaslife]

"Is that...a good thing?" he asked, unable to really tell what kind of laugh that was. "Bad thing?"

She couldn't really tell herself, either. Not yet.

"Remember I said I didn't remember hearing about Mom transitioning lately?"

[therewaslife]

"Yes," he said carefully, nodding. "Did something happen with your mum, then?"

[vanillajello]

"Well, yes and no," she replied, hesitating a little, mostly because this was the first time she was actually talking about this out loud. "Apparently, it's been months since any of the alters came out, so... We got rid of all their stuff."

[therewaslife]

"That sounds like a good thing," Bod said, still being careful with his words. "Are you not convinced things are getting better? Or just hesitant to admit it?"

[vanillajello]

"... Kinda both," Kate admitted, after chewing on her lip a bit. "I mean, this stuff always blows up in our face, eventually. But, I don't know... She seems happy."

[therewaslife]

"And if you don't let yourself believe she's all right, it'll be less painful if things go bad?" he guessed.

[vanillajello]

"Mmh." That was all the confirmation he was going to get for being entirely right, unfortunately. "It's just a really new idea for me."

[therewaslife]

"Well, I'm pleased to hear she's doing well for the moment," he said sincerely, "and I hope it lasts. If it doesn't, that's something to face when it happens."

[vanillajello]

"Stop being so logical, it creeps me out."

She didn't mean that at all. Said something else she did mean, though.

"I miss you."

[therewaslife]

"I'm always logical," he said and laughed into the phone. "And I miss you back. Is there anything you need?"
