CSR Office, Kate's Baltimore, Wednesday Afternoon
It was job interview time! And Kate was ready. She felt she looked the part, and acted the part. Slinking around corners, all confidence and alertness and spy...ness.
Something. Whatever.
At least she looked good, striding into the Capital Surveillance and Retrieval offices. Which... didn't look all that spy-like, actually. But then, why would they have? It wasn't like spies were supposed to make a big deal of themselves. Didn't exactlly help with being a spy.
She decided that this was exactly what a spy office would look like. As little spy-like as possible. Stealthy. Of course, that didn't quite explain the slobby looking tall thirtysomething guy that greeted her once she'd made her entrance, but she wasn't going to let that bother her. "Hello there," the man said, smiling. "I am Jarrett. How can I help you?"
"I'm Kate Gregson," Kate said, cool and professional. There was a flicker of recognition before Jarrett replied. This was probably who she'd talked to yesterday on the phone. "Great. Have you worked in collections before?"
Ooh, that was probably some sort of spy code for something. Maybe collecting information? But Kate had to check. Serious and on top of things. "Collecting what, exactly?"
"Debt... collections," Jarrett said, slowly. Almost as if Kate should have known that already. "This is a debt collection agency."
... Huh? What? Kate peered around the room. It was like she could actually only just now hear the ringing phones and all the other noises of a completely mundane little office. "... Ohh." So maybe this wasn't a spy gig after all. Nevermind, she was going to be all professional anyway. A job was a job. Debt collecting could be kind of cool too, right?
"I'll give you the grand tour," Jarrett said, though that was a fairly inaccurate way to put it. There wasn't much of an office to give a grand tour in. It mostly meant that Kate followed Jarrett around a corner and like five feet further into the office before he turned around to talk to her again. "We work on commission, you get five per cent of whatever you collect, so you need to be money motivated."
"I suppose I am," Kate said, though she didn't really know what that even meant right now. Too busy dealing with the mental whiplash of being in an entirely different job interview that she'd been expecting and preparing for. But at least Jarrett didn't seem to have noticed how lost she was. That was good.
"Can you get to yes?" he asked.
Yeah, that? Kate really did not understand. Still, she thought she kept sounding like she was totally on top of the situation. "... Where?" Okay, so she was sounding less and less like she knew what was going on, but her tone still sounded confident, anyway.
"I mean, are you persuasive?" Jarrett explained, and now he did look like he hadn't been expecting to have to explain this. "Can you get people to say yes?"
Oh. Oh. "I'm a girl," Kate said brightly, with a smile that wasn't entirely authentic. "That's sort of what we do."
Jarrett just nodded and smiled. "Good."
And then... Then it was a little awkward, for a moment. But looking around the office again, Kate remembered something. She'd actually been wondering about it for the spy job, but they always said is was good to ask questions and show interest at a job interview, so... "Do I need to take a piss test?"
Jarrett looked like he almost didn't understand the question at all, at first, but then he laughed. "No."
Well. Maybe not the best question to have asked, but as she stood there, awkwardly smiling, she figured she had at least given the impression of having a sense of humor, or something. And that was probably a good thing.
And lo, some time a little later after that weird little moment, for the first time in over a year, Kate Gregson was once again employed.
