Room 324, Late Thursday Morning Onwards

Kate had finally managed to get a good night's sleep, even if it was only because she'd been exhausted beyond all measure after returning from the funeral. She didn't remember much about last night, really, beyond Bod checking up on her via phonecalls through the evening until she'd announced she was going to bed. She must've been doing random crap, but couldn't remember what it had been, and didn't really care, either.

Her head was a little clearer today, though she wasn't sure if that was good or not. She didn't want to think about the funeral anymore, not about Nathan's coffin, or his mom, or how she was pretty sure Caroline hadn't cried at all, or how she herself had been crying all the fucking time. She just needed a mental break from it all.

So, she was focusing on the party tomorrow. She'd considered calling it off and having someone tear down all the posters, but she really needed something like that to concentrate her energy on instead of wallowing. So, halfway decently dressed in one of the less revealing pairs of shorts and a long hoodie, she sat on her bed and jotted down errands she needed to run today.

Kate was probably going to get sick of seeing Bod's face but he was still concerned and that meant he was going to check in on her when he had free time. He stopped in her doorway and leaned a shoulder against the frame.

"Hullo," he said quietly, looking her over.

Kate looked up at the sound of his voice. She didn't exactly smile, but she looked a little better than she had yesterday. Amazing what a bit of sleep could do.

"Hi. Come on in."

"I didn't mean to interrupt," Bod said quietly but did move inside the room slowly. "I just wanted to see how you were. I don't want to bother you."

Kate did manage a soft little smile at that, faint as it was. "You're not bothering me." She sighed, and tapped her pen against the notebook in her lap. "I'm just figuring shit out for tomorrow."

"You're still going to have your party?" He was surprised but pleased. He came over and stood beside her bed. "It might be a very good way to decompress and unwind."

"That's the idea." Well, right now the idea was to drown herself in practical matters like that, clinging to normal life as hard as she could. She looked up at him. "Figure it might be nice to meet people."

"It might," he said and reached to run his fingers over her hair lightly. "Do you need anything?"

"Cups," she said, sighing softly as he touched her. "Napkins. Bowls for snacks. Snacks themselves. All that party stuff."

Bod half smiled and kept his fingers moving through her hair. "I didn't mean for your party though I'll get those for you. I meant do you need anything?'

"No." Well, if she did, she couldn't name what it was. She also wasn't too keen on actually thinking on it. "Hey, do you think the Egyptians have any good party dishes?"

Bod sighed again and dropped his hand from her hair so he could tuck them into the pockets of his pants. "I don't know, I've never studied the party habits of the Egyptians. I don't think many people will fault you for the food."

"I'm not expecting anyone to fault me for my food," Kate replied, making a slight face up at him. "I'm just... wondering."

"Would you like me to go do some research on the topic?" Bod asked quietly. "I'm sure the library has books on Egyptian food of the time."

"It can wait." She patted the bed next to her. "You should stay for a while before I assign you party duties."

"All right," he said and took a seat beside her. His hand automatically settled against the back of neck, rubbing it lightly. "How much more planning do you have to do?"

"Not much," she sighed. "I mean, really I've got everything planned, I just need to get some of the stuff and recruit people to carry some of it to the beach tomorrow."

"I'm sure any sane man or woman would help you carry things," he told her, rubbing her neck and leaning against her shoulder. "You know I'll help, at least."

"Of course you'll help." Kate thought it was a given. She glanced over at him, managed a lopsided little smile. "I'm not worried about not getting help."

"Are you worrying about something else?" Bod asked, letting his hand slip down her back to rest there.

"No." That wasn't even a lie. Probably. She wasn't sure. "I'm not worrying about anything."

"All right," he said though his tone implied he knew that probably wasn't completely true. He just didn't want to push. "Should I leave you alone to plan?"

Kate raised an eyebrow, just slightly. "Why are you so obsessed with leaving?"

Could it be because she was still acting a little off?

"I'm not obsessed with leaving but I thought maybe you just needed time alone," Bod said, shrugging. "You're acting slightly unsettled."

"Well, I was at a funeral yesterday," Kate replied, and while that was pointing out the obvious she didn't really sound harsh or snippy. "Which included two portal trips. I'm feeling a little unsettled, yes."

"I know that," he said calmly, frowning. "And that's why I wondered if you just wanted some space and quiet. That's all."
