Room 324, Late Thursday Morning Onwards

Kate had finally managed to get a good night's sleep, even if it was only because she'd been exhausted beyond all measure after returning from the funeral. She didn't remember much about last night, really, beyond Bod checking up on her via phonecalls through the evening until she'd announced she was going to bed. She must've been doing random crap, but couldn't remember what it had been, and didn't really care, either.

Her head was a little clearer today, though she wasn't sure if that was good or not. She didn't want to think about the funeral anymore, not about Nathan's coffin, or his mom, or how she was pretty sure Caroline hadn't cried at all, or how she herself had been crying all the fucking time. She just needed a mental break from it all.

So, she was focusing on the party tomorrow. She'd considered calling it off and having someone tear down all the posters, but she really needed something like that to concentrate her energy on instead of wallowing. So, halfway decently dressed in one of the less revealing pairs of shorts and a long hoodie, she sat on her bed and jotted down errands she needed to run today.

"It is," he said and kissed the back of her neck. "What's my thing?"

"Being pale," she replied without having to think about it at all. "Clearly."

"Clearly, I'm just very boring," he said, closing his eyes and breathing her scent in. "I'm dull and pale."

"Who said anything about you being dull?" she wondered. "Maybe you're just... refreshingly low maintenance."

"No one," he admitted, laughing into her shoulder. "Is low maintenance a good thing?"

"Yes," she replied, emphatically. "I mean, look at my life right now. You're about the only low maintenance thing in there."

"I guess I shouldn't start demanding high priced dinners and fancy clothes," he said, laughing into her shoulder. "That might change your outlook on things."

"At least wait a week or two," Kate replied, tone wry. It was as close as she got to actual joking right now. "I might crack, otherwise."

"I'm not planning on becoming high maintenance all the sudden" he murmured quietly. "I wouldn't even know how to do that. I'm fine how I am. It's been a difficult week."

"A difficult year," she retorted softly, leaning back into him a bit more. "I hope it gets easier, I really do."

"Telling you to think about the good things isn't going to help, is it?" Bod asked, holding her tighter against him.

"No," Kate replied honestly. "Probably not. My mind doesn't really work like that."

"Mmm." He figured as much and he squeezed her a little tighter. "Have you talked to your mum and dad yet?"

Kate hesitated for a moment, then decided to go with the truth, even if she thought it might make her look... bad, or something. "No," she said. "Kinda thought I wouldn't be able to keep it together and I don't wanna freak them out. I called Moosh, though."

"Kate," he sighed, nuzzling the back of her shoulder and sighing. "How was your conversation with Marshall?"

"Annoyed," she replied, and let the warmth of amusement be heard in her voice, if only slightly. It had been nice, to talk to Marshall. "I fucked up with time difference. Woke him up at like three thirty in the morning."

Laughing against her shoulder, Bod didn't immediately reply. It was nice to just laugh and be amused however brief it was. "And he talked to anyway? Even after you'd woken him up?"

"Yeah," Kate said softly. "He said he might as well since he was already awake."

But she knew it was probably mostly because he'd heard her sounding freaked out or something like it.

"Poor Marshall," Bod said quietly, smiling. "Was it a good conversation, at least? Even if he was sleepy?"

"Yeah, it was," Kate said. The fact that she'd ended up crying afterwards didn't make it bad, after all. "Y'know. Nothing heavy."

"Good." He sighed again and was quiet for a few long moments. "You should still talk to your parents. If I have to, I will carry you to Kansas to see them."

"I'm gonna call them, I promise," she said, trying to sound mildly whiny even if she was glad he cared. "Just gimme a few more days."

"If you haven't called them by Monday, we're going to Kansas," Bod said and sounded serious. "I'll carry you, if I have to."

"You are not carrying me to Kansas," Kate informed him. "I'm not a five-year-old."

"I know that but you still need to talk to your parents," he told her, shaking his head. "I bet it'll make you feel better. I know it will."
