Overland Park, KS, An Afternoon in May [Friday Fandom Time]

Big surprise, Kate had run away from Fandom to Overland Park again. It was starting to become a thing with her, but she didn't care, sometimes it was good to be elsewherer. She'd been here since Wednesday night – or, they had, since Bod had come along with her, but right now he was on his class-and-diner trip back to Fandom. Or getting takeout, if you looked at it from the official OP standpoint that was oblivious to portals.

And Kate? Kate was glueing lace and fake gems and sequins to headbands, because Charmaine had decided that was going to be her new business. Making tiaras and selling them on Etsy. Generally, Kate might have mocked the idea (even if she was pretty sure it came from when she'd shown off her own prom queen tiara) but right now it was just kind of nice to be working with her hands.

And when she watched Charmaine and her big belly out of the corner of her eye, she couldn't help thinking a little about Alice. Not that she got very far with those thoughts, because Char was in a chatty mood. "-- and I don't want you turning this place into a den of sin," she was saying. "With your James Bund of a gentleman caller."

Kate snorted. "What?"

"Well, you know," Charmaine said, with what Kate assumed to be her best trying-to-be-an-adult voice. "There's going to be a baby in the house in a few months. I don't want you corrupting her."

"The baby you got pregnant with while dating someone who wasn't the father?" Kate checked with an eyebrow raise. "Tell me you're joking."

Charmaine deflated. "Okay so I don't really give a rat's ass what you two get up to as long as it's in your room, I was just trying to be, y'know, assertive and and authoritative and motherly. How'd I do?"

Kate just snorted again and shook her head.

"The important thing is that you didn't repress enough," Bod pointed out, "because you still cared about me when we were able to restart things. It hadn't gone away."

"It's never gonna go away," Kate murmured, turning her head a bit to nuzzle his cheek. "It didn't even go away in that messed up future where we didn't talk for twenty years. You're my first actual love."

"You're my first actual love too," he said, closing his eyes and sighing again. "It won't go away for me either."

"And because you're in it for the long run," she added quietly, lips somewhere by his jaw. "And you have a room with me."

[therewaslife]

"Mmm hmm," he agreed, smiling, eyes still closed. "I'm in it for the long run and I have a room with you. I have clothes and books in our room because it's ours."

"And we have a bed that's ours too," Kate added, nuzzling the side of his face a bit more. "Even if it doubles as a sofa. It's still our very own bed."

It was all so grown up, really.

"Hopefully we don't break this one," he said and felt his cheeks flush at the mention of that again. "I like thinking about a place that's ours."

"Me too," she replied, pressing her cheek to his. It was warm. "And, I don't know, I like that we already have one. Like, it's already established, so that when I move here more full-time, then you won't just come visit me, but you'll come to a place that's yours too."

"And I'll be coming to visit as often as I can," Bod promised, nodding. "You'll get tired of me being here, I bet. You'll kick me out of our room."

"Not going to happen," Kate chuckled. "I'm not gonna get tired of you. And kicking you out of the room would mean leaving you to the mercy of Charmaine, and that would just be way too cruel."

"Aww, I like your aunt," he said and squeezed, kind of really enjoying all this future talk right now. "I like your entire family."

"You like Aunt Charmaine?" Kate asked with a laugh. "Weirdo."

She was mostly teasing, with that. Charmaine was okay, otherwise she would've never agreed to move here.

"Yes, I like your aunt and your mum and your dad and your brother," Bod told her, snickering. "I like them all."

"Weirdo," she decided. "But good, since you're gonna be hanging around. You'll be well-integrated, I'm sure."

"Before you know it, I'll be helping your mum cook and doing...lawn stuff with your father," Bod joked, laughing.

"Lawn stuff," Kate repeated, amused. "Mmhmm, sure. And listening to jazz like a pro with Moosh, and they won't even remember a time when you weren't part of the family."

"And then when they find out we've already had a room together, I'll be banned to sleeping on the porch," Bod laughed, shaking his head.

Kate snickered. "They can't ban you," she pointed out. "Charmaine already knows, kinda, and our room is under her roof. Mom and Dad have no power here."

Bod laughed and shook his head, rubbing his cheek against hers as she did. "Well, then I'd feel bad and ban myself and look forlorn and woeful outside on the porch."

"You would ban yourself from my lovely nighttime presence?" Kate questioned with a raised eyebrow he wasn't going to see because she was enjoying the cheek-rubbing too much. "Dude."

"I'm sure you could entice me back from the banning," Bod decided, laughing. "You're very persuasive, aren't you? If anyone could, you could."

Kate paused to muse on that. "I think it'd depend on whether you had your phone with you."

"And if I did?" Bod asked, glancing down at her to see what she'd say.

"Well, I think putting on a hot nightgown and sending you pictures of me wearing it would work to entice you back in." A beat. "Remind me to buy a hot nightgown."

"You don't have a hot nightgown," he said, laughing. "Besides, I think just you and your shorts is enough for me."
