Overland Park, KS, A Morning in May [Sunday Fandom Time]

Something that had been very very rare lately was happening right now: Kate was waking up happy.

Last night, Overland Park time, there had been a thing at her parents' house, just a get-together with snacks at the insistence of her mother. Neil had been there and there had been much fussing over Charmaine, and it should've been lame but... It hadn't been. Kate had actually had fun. In a dorky way. She'd even found herself gossiping in the kitchen with her mother while they got more dip and soda for everyone. It was insane, but oh so damn needed.

Kate knew she was repressing many a thing waiting for her back in Fandom, but she thought that was allowed. Anything that kept her holding on to her sanity was totally allowed. And right now, being in this room and slowly drifting to proper wakefulness without immediately stressing herself out with what other people were doing was what her sanity needed.

With a sigh, she rolled onto her back and smiled at the ceiling. It was a rare good day to be her.

In one of those rare occurrences, Kate woke up before Bod. He was still stretched out beside her, face pressed into one of their pillows. He wasn't snoring (please, he didn't do that) but he was still dozing easily.

It appeared to be a morning for rare things. Kate turned her head and just watched him for a moment, all asleep and peaceful. It made her smile more.

Then she moved a bit to just lightly kiss his shoulder, just because she wanted to.

Bod shifted a bit, making a quiet noise as he did before settling back down and rubbing his face against the pillow. Bod thought he was maybe having one of those good, good dreams right now.

Kate resisted the urge to chuckle at his ability to sleep. Instead, she rolled properly onto her side and placed a few more soft kisses along his arm.

"Mm, that tickles," Bod murmured, still not completely awake so she could chalk what he was doing now up to talking in his sleep. He'd get to wakefulness eventually if she kept touching him.

Kate had every intention to keep touching him, no worries there. She did chuckle a bit now, though, at first. Her lips trailed back up along his arm, over the curve of his shoulder, soft and light. Just gently ushering him into waking up.

One of Bod's eyes cracked open, taking in the area around him and the blonde hair moving over his shoulder and arm. He inhaled deeply, staying still while she kissed him because that did feel very, very nice.

Kate moved to kiss his cheek. "Good morning," she murmured.

"Hullo," he said, coughing a bit to clear his throat. "Have you been awake long?"

"Five minutes," she replied quietly, kissing his ear next. It was there. "Not long."

He smiled into the pillow and tried to get himself to wake up a little further. "And how are you feeling today?"

"Happy," she whispered. Another benefit of how close her lips were to his ear. "Optimistic about the immediate future."

"Mmm, that's excellent to hear," Bod said quietly, stretching out and rubbing his cheek against her pillow again. "I'm happy too. Maybe all you needed was some time with your family to make you happy."

"And you," Kate replied. "Don't exclude yourself. They wouldn't have pulled this off on their own."

"And me, all right," he mumbled, finally pushing himself more onto his side than this stomach. "I'm glad you're happy. You deserve happiness."

"I do." She let his ear be so she could just sprawl and stretch out a bit next to him. "And I deserve you."

And she was probably not all the way rid of sleep fuzziness yet to have those words come so easily to her.

"Yes, you do," Bod agreed, smiling at her. He reached over and rubbed her arm up and down. "You do deserve me. I'm glad you think that, I really am."

Kate didn't bother really replying to that, just smiled at him and the touch on her arm.

"You're looking very handsome this morning."

"I'm still half asleep," Bod pointed out, chuckling. "How can I look very handsome this morning?"

"You just do," Kate replied, and pouted at him very disapprovingly. Very. "Don't question it."

[therewaslife]

"I wasn't questioning it," Bod said, laughing some. "I was just curious. I wasn't sure you could look handsome after you've just woken up."

"Oh come on, like you've never looked at me with my hair all tangled and my eyes barely open and still thought me pretty," Kate returned, amused. "I mean, I'm not sure if you've ever said as much, but you're so the type to think that."

"That's different," Bod insisted with a quiet laugh. "You're a lot better looking than I am. You are beautiful in the mornings."

"And so are you," she reiterated lazily. "It's not different at all."

[therewaslife]

"It's completely different," he said, arguing just to argue. "You are beautiful. I'm not. It's simple mathematics."
