Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

Oh thank God, someone who wasn't fourteen years old.

"Mitchell."

"Eric," Mitchell said, sounding pleased. "You actually came to Kansas?"

... and like he found this hilarious.

"I had to check to see if it's as boring as I remember."

Beat.

"And yes, pretty much."

"That makes me unsure if I ever want to get as old as you have, mate," Mitchell said, taking a swig of his beer.

"Of course you do," Eric said. "Living forever's kind of our thing."

Mitchell snorted. "You know as well as I do most of us don't make it that far."

"True, but I'd much rather continue to learn that Kansas is boring than face the final death," Eric replied.

Mitchell shrugged idly. "At least they have decent import," he decided. "Though I wouldn't know why anyone would want to live here permanently."

"There can't be that many people in witness protection," Eric mused.

"Who is your Sheriff of Kansas?" Mitchell asked. "Sounds like you owe them a pint."

"Zeus Clan," Eric said vaguely. "Not entirely sure who's in charge here at the moment. Things have been fluid since Arkansas died."

Mitchell winced in sympathy. "Yeah? That'll be... fun."

"I got to rip people's heads off!"

Most people didn't take quite as much joy in that, Eric.

Mitchell slanted the kind of look at him he'd always reserved for Ivan in the past. "Always an upside with you, eh, Eric?"

"It's more interesting than doing the Electric Slide," Eric said. He shrugged a shoulder. "Arkansas was marrying Louisiana. It ended badly."

In case Mitchell hadn't picked that up with the heads-being-ripped off bit.

"I didn't think ripping heads off was usually a wedding tradition over there," Mitchell said, agreeing with the narrative. "But the resulting chaos... that's going to be pain."

Eric nodded. "I mean, fuck Arkansas," he said, "and Mississippi, for good measure, but it certainly makes life a little more exciting for a while."

Thus laying low in Fandom for a bit while things straightened themselves out. Eric liked being alive.
