Jelly Bean B2, Friday Morning

Someone was spooning Kate and nuzzling her neck as she woke up. It was a really nice thing to wake up to. Cozy and comfortable. And obviously there was only one person it could be. So, sleepily, and fully expecting to see a pale face and some floppy hair and grey eyes and probably a cute smile, Kate turned her head and opened her eyes, and--

Well. The guy was pale, yes. Really pale, actually. His skin was almost white, not the kind of peachy pink that passed for white skin in general terms. And his hair was floppy, but it was also a little too long. And black. His eyes were kind of black, too. And his clothes.

He was most definitely not Bod. Kate pushed herself up on her elbows, eyes wide. "What the fuck?"

"Good morning, Kate," the guy replied calmly, with a gently amused smile.

"Who are you? And why the fuck are you in my bed?"

The guy kept smiling. Actually, there was something calming about him. Comforting. Familiar. "I usually go where you go," he said. "Except when you think you don't need me - which is totally fine, by the way - and you end up giving me to Bod to prove a point. Take my hand. You look like you need it."

Without even thinking about it, Kate took the guy's hand. It felt right.

And at the same time she understood what he was telling her. Her free hand came up to the top of her chest, reaching for something that wasn't there. And the guy just gave him something that was almost a smirk.

Still holding the necklace's hand, Kate fell back with a frustrated grunt and burrowed her face into the pillow. "Fucking Fandom."

Kate laughed, a little embarrassed. The necklace quirked a smile at her.

"Um, yeah, I guess so," she said. "Just... Felt right."

"Well, that makes sense," he said, nodding his understanding. "If you'd like to do that now, it's not going to bother me."

"Oh, I don't need to, I'm fine," Kate replied quickly with a shake of her head.

The necklace rolled his eyes and held his hand out to her.

She took it. "Okay fine. Maybe I do. This is weird."

"It is but at least it isn't dangerous?" he pointed out, reaching behind her to rub her back gently. "It could be much worse."

"Yeah," Kate sighed. "Just a minor Fandom thing, really."

As minor as waking up with an unfamiliar guy could be, anyway.

"At least I don't have class today."

[therewaslife]

"Relax, Kate," he said and leaned over to kiss her shoulder. "It's all right. If it's a typical island thing, it shouldn't last too long. Until then, you've a new friend."

[vanillajello]

"Or, technically, an old friend," the necklace said, tugging lightly on her hand. "It's not like I'm a stranger."

Kate pursed her lips and looked from one... boy, to the other. "I know all of that. I'm just adjusting."

Bod just kept rubbing her back and looked over the necklace. "How long have you been with Kate, exactly?"

"About a year and a half, give or take," the necklace said easily. "Long time for a necklace like me."

Kate just examined the nails of her free hand, trying not to feel like this was all so very, very weird.

"Have you been enjoying yourself?" asked Bod, trying to not think about the fact that he was talking to a necklace in human form.

"As Kate's necklace?" the necklace asked. He didn't find it at all odd to be talked to. Or to be talking himself. Or to have a himself that could be talking.

Fandom magic.

"Well, she's made me who I am."

[therewaslife]

"I don't actually know that much about her necklace," he confessed, glancing at her. "I just know that she's quite attached to you. It. You."

[vanillajello]

That gently amused smile resurfaced again. "Either is fine," the necklace said.

Under her breath, Kate muttered "I'm not that attached..."

"I wouldn't be here if you weren't," he pointed out. "Do you think a lot of people had their three-dollar necklaces animated today?"

"Two fifty. On sale."

"Okay," the necklace replied. "Two fifty. So my point stands even firmer. I was a cheap trinket."

"The only thing I have that might have changed is the book she mentioned earlier," Bod shared, slanting a glance at her.

"I don't think I'm quite that attached though," he said even if he...kind of was. "It's only a book."

[vanillajello]

"And I'm just a cheap trinket," the necklace repeated, shrugging a shoulder, even if his tone was rather meaningful. "And she left me in your room just like you left your book in hers."

Here was where Kate cut in. "You're from Hot Topic," she said, frowning, "Stop acting like you're a-- like you're some sort of a zen master."

The necklace just smiled. "I'm sorry, but you made me this way when you started relying on me for comfort."

[therewaslife]

"She left you in my room to prove a point," he replied, shaking his head, "and I left a book in her room because..."

Why had he done that?

"It just felt right."

[vanillajello]

The necklace nodded. "And do you think she would've left me with just anyone?"

She hardly ever even took him off.

[therewaslife]

"I don't..." He paused, having never really thought about it. He turned towards Kate. "Would you have?"

[vanillajello]

"... No," Kate admitted, grudgingly. Mostly because it was weird to have such insightful jewelry.

The necklace looked almost smug.

[therewaslife]

"I didn't know that," he said and smiled, showing some hints of shyness and pleasure at that. "Thank you for trusting me with it."

[vanillajello]

Kate smiled a little bit. "Yeah, well, I don't think it should be much of a surprise, anymore."

[therewaslife]

"It's not," he assured her, shaking his head, "but thinking back, it was at the time. We weren't...where we are now. Things were different."

[vanillajello]

"Way different," she agreed quietly. "Things are better now. I'd say so, anyway."

[therewaslife]

"I agree," he said and couldn't help the smile that crossed his face. "Different for the better, though."

[vanillajello]

She nodded and smiled. "And a lot of random crap's happened between then and now."

The necklace just watched them, idly brushing his thumb against the back of Kate's hand. He was used to that, after all. Being nothing more than a comforting presence.
