Room 324, Monday Afternoon

After the arrest and everything, yesterday had continued to be just as moodswingy a day as many of the others before it. On one hand, her video had gained more than 250,000 hits in a single day, and Lynda had invited her to the Crossroads art shindig this Friday. On the other, she and her brother had had to listen to their parents fighting for like two hours in the evening. That always made her feel like an orphan. It sucked.

As did having to leave Marshall alone with the mess she could escape, especially when it was going to be his sixteenth birthday tomorrow. But Kate was still insanely glad when she finally managed to convince her parents to unground her so she could come back to Fandom.

She flew back, her parents paid for the tickets. She was too late for her classes, and probably would've skipped them anyway, so once she made it into her room, she just dropped her bags on the floor and fell over onto her bed, burying her face in her pillows.

Home sweet home, or something.

"All right," he said, nodding. "Hullo. Welcome back to the island."

"Hullo," she replied, fondly mimicking his accent for that one word. She'd missed it, even though they'd talked on the phone. "Pretty good to be back."

"Are you British now?" he asked, pushing away from the door to wander closer to her.

"Yes," she decided with a nod. "It's my new thing. A whole identity makeover."

Funny how close that was to the truth, in some way.

"You haven't changed your appearance so I wouldn't say it's a whole makeover," he pointed out, stopping when his knees hit the edge of her bed. "Just the voice, perhaps."

"It's enough." Except for she didn't have the concentration to keep sounding even vaguely British. She held out a hand for him. "Join me?"

"Of course," he said, taking her hand and settling on the bed with her. "Why are you so tired?"

Kate shrugged a shoulder, lacing her fingers with his. "Been kind of an eventful weekend. Or week. Or something."

Bod nodded. "Did you want to tell me about it?" She hadn't been too forthcoming on the phone so he didn't know if in person would be any better.

Kate sighed and brought her free hand up to rub at her eyes some more. "Ugh, where should I start?" Eventful didn't really even cover it.

"The beginning might be helpful," he said, frowning a little in concern. "Is was that bad?"

"Well, not everything was bad," she mused, downplaying it a little. "I mean, I made some cool new friends and I have just insanely awesome things going on, but... Home's kind of a freak show."

"Perhaps we can start with the good things?" Bod suggested. "Why not start there?"

Kate didn't exactly have a problem with that, no. Her expression lightened up instantly.

"Well, do you remember that woman with the big debt?"

"I do," he said, nodding. "How could I forget? You were quite taken with her."

"Well, now I'm even more," she told him. "Because Lynda is just fucking awesome."

[therewaslife]

"All right," said Bod, nodding. "Why is she that?"

[vanillajello]

"Because she just is," she said. "And because I'm totally getting to be Princess Valhalla Hawkwind! I mean, at first she was just going to have me model for a painting, and we did that for a while, but then we did a video!"

Kate? Moved fast sometimes.

"Wait, wait," he said, waving a free hand. "Slow down. I barely understand a word you just said."

Kate took a breath. "I'm totally gonna be famous on the internet," she said. "Lynda and I made this music video for the princess character."

[therewaslife]

"And being famous on the internet is a good thing?" Bod guessed. "A music video?"

[vanillajello]

"Being famous is a good thing." Yeah, Kate may have been oversimplifying things a bit there. But she was too excited to really care. "Wanna see it? Over a quarter million other people already have."

Or, there had been that many views. But as said, she didn't care about the specifics.

"I...all right," Bod said, nodding. He didn't really know what famous on the internet meant but she seemed excited so he was interested.

So far? Famous on the internet seemed to mean a bunch of pretty degrading comments with a few better ones sprinkled in between. But Kate didn't care. She still thought this was the best thing ever.

She pushed herself up from the bed and went to grab her laptop from her bag. "It's totally awesome."

"So you've said," Bod replied, nodding. "I believe you. You look excited."
