Overland Park, KS, Monday Afternoon

Saturday had seen a very weird trip to the mall, and as a consequence, Sunday had been pretty quiet. Tara had woken up as herself again, and everything was a little awkward. It wasn’t as if Tara’s condition was a big family secret, but it was out now, and it affected the mood in the house. Everyone tried to do their own thing, and conversations revolved around trivial stuff. Kate’s family, in an effort to make light conversation, asked questions about life in Fandom and where Leto was from. They didn’t know how much editing went into answering them.

And today the house was empty apart from Kate and Leto. Max had gone to work, Tara had gone somewhere with Charmaine, and Marshall had gone to visit his best friend. It seemed like they were all maybe slightly running away, glad to put the weekend behind them.

Kate was holed up in her room for the moment. She had taken a shower, and after getting dressed and blowdrying her hair, she rummaged around her desk drawer until she found a lighter and a near-empty packet of cigarettes. She took one, and after opening her door a little to signal it was okay to come in, she went to smoke the cigarette by the open window.

"You'd have to ask him," she shrugged. "I never said I loved him, I thought it was just a casual thing. Then there was all this messy stuff and he got fired and showed up here, thinking I was gonna run away with him."

"Then you certainly have had worse experiences than I have," Leto replied, not quite smiling. "I just got threatened by her friends." He held a hand out to Kate.

"It wasn't so bad. I only had to hijack Mom's car and drive away in a panic." Wow, listen to the sarcasm there.

She took his offered hand, and gave it a little squeeze, absent-mindedly wondering why she never hesitated in doing so. "It was kinda my own fault, anyway. Not the stalkery thing, but the mess itself."

"It was?" he asked. "How?"

She made a face. "It's embarrassing. He was my boss and I kinda broke our thing off once, but then he fired me and I got back together with him and he gave me my hjob back, but then I tried to sue the company for sexual harrassment and... Yeah. Messy."

Leto frowned. "He fired you when you refused him? And he expected you to run off with him? Who is this man?"

He took a step closer to Kate, as if wanting to protect her, something which she clearly didn't need.

"Gene Stuart," Kate replied, amused by his attitude. No, she didn't need protection, but it still felt nice.

"I don't think he's exactly right in the head."

"Clearly not," Leto muttered. "Is he still causing you problems? Has your family dealt with him?"

"After I ditched him in the living room, I think I met him maybe two or three times. I think he got the message. At least I haven't seen him since the start of the summer," Kate said, shaking her head. "Mom and Dad don't know about this, and Moosh doesn't know everything."

"Why didn't you tell them?" he asked.

"I don't want to upset Mom if I don't have to. I could handle it," she said.

He gave a quick nod, choosing not to ask further about it. Instead he leaned forward to kiss her cheek lightly.

She smiled at him for doing that. It was pleasant. She touched his arm lightly, like the touch needed to be reciprocated.

"Thank you," he said. "For inviting me. And don't worry about anything your family might have done to confuse me."

"I'll try not to," Kate snorted. "By the way, I hope this is obvious but it has to be said... Only two other people in Fandom know about Mom. I would like it to stay that way."

"I won't tell anyone," he promised. "And I have only told a few about what I am." He locked her hand in his.

"So it's kind of a two-way deal," she nodded, grinning. "Good."

He grinned back. "So, is there anything else I need to know? Or anything else I should experience before we go back?"

"I think I heard Dad say something about going bowling tonight. It's a family thing," Kate said. "So there's that. Other than that, I can't think of anything specific. I just hope you don't get to experience Buck."

"Another one of your mother's personalities?" Leto asked. "And I will be happy to join you for bowling." He had no idea what it was.

"Yup. He's this biker dude, and apparently, if anyone treats me wrong, Buck's who they should worry about." She rolled her eyes and sighed. "He's really good at bowling, though. He's taught me and Moosh some tricks."

"From what you told me about your life here it sounds like someone like that could be useful," Leto replied teasingly. "I have to confess I have no idea what bowling is."

"Buck's idea of being helpful is beating up my boyfriend outside my school in front of everyone I know," Kate replied, making a face. Still not quite over that, no matter how much Ben deserved it.

"Bowling's a game where you roll a heavy ball at some pins. You get points for knocking down as many pins as you can," she explained. "It's simple, you'll see when we go."

Leto saw this as a reasonable response, however. "If he deserved it, wasn't that a good thing?"

"Simple? I like the sound of that." Someone was also quite good at learning things that required control over your body.

"It was embarrassing. Everyone saw my mother kick my boyfriend's ass. As if people didn't already look at me funny," she said.

"But he did deserve it. Benjamin's a waste of eyeliner. And he hit her back."
