Overland Park, KS, Sunday Noon
Yesterday's lunch date had turned into going to an art museum, which had turned into having coffee, which had turned into aimlessly wandering around in the unusually warm for a January weather of KCMO way into the evening, talking. And kissing. Kate had made the first move on that, though only because she'd been able to tell he wanted her to. It didn't feel quite as good as she remembered it feeling, but she knew why that was (though she was determined not to think about it) and that was something she thought could be gotten over by practicing, and practice they did. Once you got the hang of it it was hard to stop, and she'd missed doing things like that more than she'd realized.
And today, all that had turned into Zach taking Kate out to play tennis. She couldn't believe that was something that was actually happening in her life, but she wasn't objecting. They needed to make the most of the time they had with each other all face to face, since she was heading back to Fandom tonight, and tennis just sounded like fun. And she happened to even own a white tennis outfit, as he found out when he came to pick her up, since she was just pulling a coat on when she opened the door. She'd had to hurry when she'd seen him pull up to their driveway; she didn't really feel like inviting him into her house yet. He should've just been glad she didn't exit her house even quicker or they may have been a collision.
"You look great, you certainly know how to dress for tennis," he complimented her as he was walking her to his car, watching her button up her coat. "Where's your racket?"
"Oh, I have to rent one, I don't really play sports," she replied lightly. "I'm, you know..."
"Delicate?" he asked, smiling at her. The guess made her give him an almost embarrassed smile back. "Lazy." And maybe it wasn't the most accurate description of her anymore, with all the time spent hitting the gym or practicing in the salle, but all that stuff was for Kate-in-Fandom. And here she felt more like Kate-in-Kansas. Zach made her feel like it, and so based her answers and reactions on that.
He looked her over, gestured vaguely at the outfit he knew was underneath the coat now. "But you own the ensemble?"
Kate smirked. "Well, I require many garments for my many moves," she explained. "This is actually a costume from my tennis-themed dance show at my old school." She stopped to stand beside his car, gave a shrug of her shoulder. "I played Venus Williams, but then I quit." Like she tended to do. If there was anything off about her expression when she said that, Zach didn't seem to notice. Or maybe he caught her looking away, a mild frown crossing her face, and just wanted to distract her from it. Who knew.
"Hey," he said, "would you mind if I called you Katherine instead of Kate?"
Her eyebrows quirked. "Like when Tom Cruise turned Katie into Kate?" she wondered, somewhat amused by this idea. It was better than some of the other nicknames she'd heard lately. Even if she thought going more formal was a weird direction to go in for a nickname, hence the snark. "Made her start wearing those Zac Posen sunglasses?"
Zach just grinned at her. "Is that a hint?" he wondered in turn. "You want me to get you some Zac Posen sunglasses?" Kate rolled her eyes at his rich boy ease in spending money, but he was undeterred. "Just tell me, we can stop at the Nordstrom on the way to tennis."
Kate looked up, almost rolling her eyes again, exasperated. "No," she said, half sighing the word. He laughed, opening the car door for her. "I'll buy you fucking Nordstrom's."
"Oh my God," she groaned as she slid into the passenger seat. "Or that house," he continued, pointing towards the Hubbard house next door, before he rested his arms on the top of the car door, smiling down at her. "I will buy that house and move in so I can be on standby to make sure you have every single thing you need."
Kate gave him an unimpressed look. "I get it, you're rich," she said. There had been times when that would've been the best thing ever, but maybe she'd grown up some since then. "Whoop-diddily-dee, Zach can have whatever he wants."
He didn't seem to take it as much of an insult, though. Instead, he smirked at her, charmingly smug. "That remains to be seen," was all he said before he finally closed her door.
