Room 324, Early Saturday Afternoon

The first day of Parents’ Weekend had gone pretty well, and the second seemed to have had a good start too.

After escorting her mother to Mitchell’s office, Kate had met up with her brother to come hang out in her room.

”So, what were you doing when I was with Mom?” she asked, sitting down on the edge of her bed.

"I went to The Perk and had hot chocolate," Marshall said.

He was debating which subject to bring up first: the cute boy or the weird stuff his sister hadn't been telling him.

"Oooh, the hot chocolate at The Perk is insanely good!" Kate said. "The coffee, too."

When they didn't refuse to serve her.

"It was really good," Marshall agreed. "As was the company."

"...Company? You had company? Who?"

"This guy Eric that I met yesterday at the picnic," Marshall said, unable to keep the smile off of his face.

"Moosh! You're hooking up with someone here? Oh my god!" Kate exclaimed with a wide grin.

"...Wait. Eric? It's not Eric Matthews, is it?"

"Um, I didn't catch his last name," Marshall said. "He's got blonde hair, dresses nice, from New York."

"Definitely not Matthews then," Kate noted, fairly glad about it. They didn't need to be getting together with any of the same guys, thanks. "I don't think I've met him. So. Tell me everything!"

"He's very cute," Marshall said. "And he's gay. And he seemed to like me."

"Well if you want to get it on with him, you better do it fast, 'cause you'll be off the island by Sunday night," Kate teased.

She'd missed teasing him.

"I'm not sure I'm ready for that," Marshall said. "Especially when I'm a little concerned about his sanity."

"...Why?"

"He was talking about people here being aliens and from different galaxies and stuff," Marshall said, giving his sister a pointed look.

The truth or lies?

"Yeah. That's pretty weird." Ah, stalling.

"But he showed me this weird hologram thingy," Marshall said. "I've never seen anything like it before."

"Oh? What was it like?"

Stalling. Kate had been so focused on Tara that she had entirely failed to prepare for Marshall finding out about anything.

"He pushed some buttons and it was a hologram of a spaceship," Marshall said. "So, Kate, is there anything you want to tell me?"

He knew his sister well enough to know when she was stalling.

"No." Well, there wasn't. She didn't want to tell him.

But she had to. "...Okay so this place is weird. Like, really weird. Not weird like Mom but weird, like, just really freaking strange. Sometimes. Most of the time."

"So, cute boy isn't crazy?" Marshall asked.

"No." Beat. "Probably not, anyway."

Marshall knew his sister wasn't crazy. Which meant she just confirmed everything Eric had told him.

"I thought you left home to get away from the crazy."

Kate sighed. "Yeah, well, so did I. Turns out it's not so easy."

"But you stayed," Marshall said.

"It's... different here. I mean, it's weird but... I kinda like it here," Kate replied.

"Yeah, I think I'm starting to understand why," Marshall admitted.
