Room 206, The Arms Hotel, Insanely Early Sunday Morning
Maybe making a hasty exit from the mixer at the community center hadn't been the greatest idea, but Kate had felt it had been the only choice. Yes, she could have gone and found Bod and gotten the truth about the situation, but under the circumstances, it had seemed like either way she would have lost.
If it would've turned out Silas had been lying, like she was so adamant to convince herself he had, her going over to embarrass herself in front of Bod would've only given the man the satisfaction of seeing he'd gotten to her with his cruel little stunt.
And if it would've turned out Silas had been telling the truth... Well.
It had taken Zach a good couple of hours just to get Kate to calm down. She'd been vague about what had happened, but she'd given him enough that he'd pieced together that the man had been a relation of her ex-boyfriend's. This had eventually led to him talking about how she really should get off the island because any place that made her look like she had was not good for her, and she didn't sound much happier when she was talking about the island than when she talked about her home, and didn't she agree that they should start looking into getting her that condo in the Crossroads as soon as possible, so she could move in and start spending half her week in KC in her own place, free from all of it?
And once Kate had regained her composure, she'd mostly just tried to distract him with absent kisses until he'd given in to her advances, and stopped talking in favor of doing things. She'd just needed to stop thinking, and he obliged. Maybe it was the wrong way to go about dealing with emotionally heavy things – it had been once before – but at least she'd eventually felt tired enough to sleep.
And now, hours later, in the middle of the night, Kate suddenly woke up to the feeling of being trapped. Like she couldn't breathe. She had just enough time to work herself up into a panic as she woke up, before becoming conscious enough to realize that she could actually breathe just fine, and the feeling wasn't caused by anything other than that she was on her back, and Zach had rolled over at some point and ended up half on top of her, head against her shoulder. Being trapped wasn't really anything more than a heavy arm slung over her chest.
Trying to calm down her poor racing heart, Kate shoved gently at Zach until he rolled back and off her with a sigh in his sleep. She pushed herself up to sitting, gathering a blanket around her naked body, and just watched him for a moment. He didn't wake up, and he looked younger and older all at the same time and that was --
Something. It was something. She got up, wrapping the blanket tighter around herself, and tiptoed her way to the window to peek out between the curtains. She'd watch the nighttime view until she stopped feeling like screaming.
