vanillajello | Overland Park, KS, A Morning in May [Wednesday Fandom Time]

The stupid thing about going to Kansas was that time was much slower. Kate was painfully aware that while she'd already been gone from Fandom over two days, it had barely been 18 hours for her. Still, after a night at home, she was just about starting to feel a little less raw. The general nausea had abated, at least, as had the panic.

The guilt, however irrational she knew it to be, would probably stay for a while.

Stretching out on her bed, Kate reached to get her phone from the nightstand, then turned it on. For a moment, she thought about making a call – to Bod, to Jack, to Mitchell, to Hannibal, to anyone – but she decided against it, unable to really decide what it was she wanted to say to any one of them. (Except maybe Hannibal. There was a certain amount of I get it now present.) She put the phone down on the bed next to her.

She'd be available now; that'd have to be enough.

"I keep telling you, my dad's not actually going to murder you if there's some hint that you might have maybe seen me naked," Kate laughed, starting to go down the stairs. "I'd rather not go into why I know that but seriously."

"I still don't think he wants to know that exactly," Bod remarked, snickering. "I remember the look on his face when he saw me cuddling you awhile back. He didn't look pleased."

"That was a long time ago." Even if he'd reacted the same way to Zach and her making out on her bed more recently. "He just needs to deal. And he didn't even beat Ben up after he took my virginity all unprotected and stuff." A beat. "Of course, Buck and Moosh did, but anyway."

"Ah yes, there's another ire I'd rather not irritate," Bod said, pointing at her as they walked. "I don't want Buck to dislike me. He seems rather...aggressive."

"Well, he is, kinda," Kate shrugged. "But y'know, he doesn't get like that without a reason. I mean, when he beat up Ben it was because Mom saw him pushing me around earlier, not because we were sleeping together."

"I think he'd try and intimidate me for fun though," Bod decided, swinging their hands back and forth. "Remember, I'm not manly and he sounds like the type to tease."

"You deal with me all the time," Kate retorted as they came to the bottom of the stairs and she reached to grab her keys. "I can't see Buck teasing you worse than I already do."

"And I bet you would laugh if Buck teased me!" Bod declared, chuckling. "If he wasn't going to punch me, you would laugh and be amused! I know you would."

"Well yeah." That much was obvious. She shook her head as she led him to the door again. "But when I'm amused, I'm happy, and you like it when I'm happy, right?"

"I love it when you're happy," Bod agreed with a nod. "I love that I've just agreed with your reasoning to laugh at me."

"It was inevitable," Kate replied smugly, squinting a bit at being out in the sun again once they'd stepped outside. "You're dealing with the master of reasoning."

When they were outside, Bod let go of her hand because he wanted to slide his arm around her shoulders and walk closer to her.

"You're the master of many things," he replied, smiling. "And yes, some of them are dirty and no, I'm not telling you what."

"Oh my God, why not?" Kate exclaimed, faking outrage even as she leaned in to slide her own arm around his waist. "You can't say that and then say you won't tell. That's bullshit."

"You can use your imagination," Bod declared with a smirk. Yes, he was smirking now. "It's not bull anything. It's something that you can think about while I'm gone. I'm sure it'll be something nice and enjoyable for your fantasies."

"I don't think you'll even be gone long enough for me to get to any interesting theories," Kate complained, giving him a little squeeze. "You're a tease."

"I'm going to take that as a compliment," Bod said, sounding almost smug. "Thank you. My portal's just at the end of the street so I wouldn't draw attention."

"Yeah, I think my family gets enough of that already," Kate mused, "without everyone going 'and now the daughter's boyfriend fell out of a glowy circle thing right in front of their house'."

"At least you've been able to tell them that we're together again?" Bod pointed out, glancing over at her. "I know the slow progression of time was impeding that."

"Oh yeah, they've known for... a few weeks, here-time?" Kate confirmed, nodding. "So you being here won't be a huge surprise like that."

"I did wonder that on my way here," Bod admitted with a quiet laugh. "They don't mind that we're together again?"

"My family likes you more than anyone else I've ever dated," Kate replied, giving him a little nudge. "They're fine."

Probably all blaming her for the break-up, too.

"Good," Bod said, sounding very pleased at that. He nudged her back and spotted the portal up ahead. "It'll be a good weekend, Kate. I promise. We can just...get away."

"And pretend we're eagerly anticipating my graduation," Kate added, glancing at the portal then reaching to give his cheek a kiss. "Yeah. It'll be... it'll be good. We'll live like quasi-normal people for a while."

"We will," he said and kissed her cheek in return before letting her go. "I'll return before you even realize it. I've got your list and I'll be back soon."

"You better," she said as she let him go. "I'll be here. Wondering what it is that I'm a dirty master of."
