Overland Park, KS, An Afternoon in May [Friday Fandom Time]

Big surprise, Kate had run away from Fandom to Overland Park again. It was starting to become a thing with her, but she didn't care, sometimes it was good to be elsewherer. She'd been here since Wednesday night – or, they had, since Bod had come along with her, but right now he was on his class-and-diner trip back to Fandom. Or getting takeout, if you looked at it from the official OP standpoint that was oblivious to portals.

And Kate? Kate was glueing lace and fake gems and sequins to headbands, because Charmaine had decided that was going to be her new business. Making tiaras and selling them on Etsy. Generally, Kate might have mocked the idea (even if she was pretty sure it came from when she'd shown off her own prom queen tiara) but right now it was just kind of nice to be working with her hands.

And when she watched Charmaine and her big belly out of the corner of her eye, she couldn't help thinking a little about Alice. Not that she got very far with those thoughts, because Char was in a chatty mood. "-- and I don't want you turning this place into a den of sin," she was saying. "With your James Bund of a gentleman caller."

Kate snorted. "What?"

"Well, you know," Charmaine said, with what Kate assumed to be her best trying-to-be-an-adult voice. "There's going to be a baby in the house in a few months. I don't want you corrupting her."

"The baby you got pregnant with while dating someone who wasn't the father?" Kate checked with an eyebrow raise. "Tell me you're joking."

Charmaine deflated. "Okay so I don't really give a rat's ass what you two get up to as long as it's in your room, I was just trying to be, y'know, assertive and and authoritative and motherly. How'd I do?"

Kate just snorted again and shook her head.

"You don't want to give me up, I don't want to give you up so it makes it very easy not to worry," Bod decided quietly. "You're just secure in the relationship."

"Well, that's weird for me," Kate replied with a quiet laugh. "Like, a secure relationship? What is this madness?"

"You don't think you deserve one of those?" Bod asked her, smiling. "There are some things in life that should be stable and secure. This is one of them."

"Not really a question of deserving," she mused. "I've just... never had one before. It's all new and weird, and I don't think I was expecting one."

"Well, you have one," he said and kissed her ear. "So, it can just be an unexpected good thing for you and me."

"I can deal with that," she promised, smiling to herself. "And you can keep being affectionate towards my ear."

[therewaslife]

"And I can deal with that," he said and kissed her ear again, even going so far as to flick it with the tip of his tongue.

"Yes, I feel that," she snickered. "I'd go so far as to say you're dealing with it really well."

"Well, your ears are very nice," he murmured, blowing a cool breath at her earlobe. "I just can't seem to help myself."

Kate shivered against him. She couldn't help herself either. "Well, they are really nice ears. I can see how you'd have trouble with that."

"I had no idea your ears were such a sensitive area." He pressed a kiss behind her ear and sighed. "I'll remember that for the future."

"Every bit of me can be sensitive," she murmured, "as long as you're touching it right."

And he so often was.

"I guess that means I should just keep touching you right," he decided quietly, pressing his lips against her neck and keeping them there while he held her. "It's a good plan."

"No, going to Disneyland is a good plan," Kate sighed, finding herself shivering again. Just a bit. "What you're proposing is a great plan."

"Great plan, then," Bod said, holding her tighter and sighing. "Sometimes, I do manage to have great plans. Sometimes."

"Often," she corrected. "You have great plans often. It's one of my many many reasons to love you."

[therewaslife]

"I'll take your word for it," Bod said and laughed quietly. "I'm glad it's one of the many many reasons though. I wouldn't know what to do if I happened to run out of reasons."

"There won't be any running out of reasons," Kate promised, lightly shaking her head. "There wasn't even when we weren't together."

"I thought you spent those months trying not to think of me," Bod said but it was light, not intended to bring up bad memories.

[vanillajello]

"I did," Kate snorted. "And you showed up at my door to check up on me after i didn't come to class. You try not loving someone when they do that."

[therewaslife]

Bod cheek might have warmed when she admitted that but he wasn't blushing. He just felt...he liked hearing things like that considering how outwardly bad things had seemed.

"When things were at their worst, I still would have come to check on you. I was worried."

[And I go AFK for just a wee bit! I will bring you back a blizzard. Google that if Finland doesn't have Dairy Queens!]

"I know," Kate said. "You're like that. I'm pretty sure I would've checked on you too if you'd have missed a class. I would've just been way more passive-aggressive."

[Ooh it's like a pyörremyrsky (lol Finnish, I know I know) from Spice Ice. GIMME.]

"As in checking in on me without making it look like that's what you were doing?" Bod guessed and rubbed his cheek against hers.

[AND I HAVE GOTTEN YOU ONE. It's midnight truffle. Mmm, chocolate.]

"Kinda," she murmured. "But more like sneakily guilt tripping you for not being all the way dead and giving me proper justification for worrying."

"Right, right, of course," Bod said, chuckling. "If my arm or leg wasn't falling off, you would have tried to make me think I was in the wrong for not going all the way with my injuries."
