Room 324, Late Friday Morning

It was Kate's birthday.

Not that that was much evident from anything, except maybe the slightly stilted happy birthday phonecall she'd gotten from her dad earlier, and the far more animated one from Lynda a little later. But it was still her birthday. Seventeen. Hmmh.

She was grabbing a portal to KC in the evening to join Lynda in the Crossroads district's First Friday art thing. And afterwards she was going to take another portal back, and tomorrow morning Lynda was going to fly over to be her weekend guest.

But for now? She was lazing about in a skimpy top and shorts (it was her birthday, she thought she was allowed) with some candy and a random bad movie on her laptop. And wearing her Princess Valhalla boots for no real reason, other than having just checked the insane number of hits on her video.

So far it was an okay birthday.

Kate reached to poke him on the nose for that.

"No.."

Bod wrinkled his nose at that and said, "But -- you are."

"No." She poked the top of his chest next. "My birthday, my rules."

"That doesn't make sense," Bod insisted, laughing. "If you're obviously wrong, why should I go on as if you're not?"

"Because it'd make me happy!" Kate laughed. "Don't be so dumb."

[therewaslife]

"I'm not dumb!" Bod said, giving her a frown for that. "And you're not already happy? I brought you flowers for your birthday."

"Flowers don't make up for arguing," she informed him, stepping back towards her bed so she could flop down on it dramatically.

It was extra dramatic thanks to those boots. "So don't argue."

"But, you like arguing with me."

Bod enjoyed using her words on arguing against her.

"What's the matter?"

"I like being right," she said, stretching a little. "I like that better than arguing. Can't I get that for a birthday present?"

[therewaslife]

"You're acting like I don't have anything else for you." In actuality, he had a few things to give her for her birthday. "I didn't just bring flowers."

"What else is there? Scathing remarks about my appearance? Making sure I never win another argument ever?"

Oh, she knew there was probably something else, she'd seen the bag after all. But she was having her own kind of fun.

"Um." Bod frowned and looked down at his bag. "No."

"How disappointing," Kate teased, eyes flicking from the ceiling to him.

"Well, what is there?"

[therewaslife]

"I mean, would you rather I not give you anything else?" Bod asked, trying to gauge her reactions as best he could. "I didn't mean to argue with you earlier, if that's what this is about."

Well, now he was confused, so maybe she'd actually won?

Kate shook her head, and pushed herself up to a sitting position again. "Come on, Bod, it's me," she said. "When have I ever not wanted to get things? Gimme presents."

"I don't know, perhaps there were some different rules on your birthday," he replied, stepping closer to the bed with his bag. "You've already invoked those once on me today."

"Yes, and you ignored them," she pointed out with a half smile. "Don't start following possible rules now. We're just getting to the good stuff."

[therewaslife]

"I didn't ignore them, I just didn't know them," said Bod, reaching into his bag to pull out a badly wrapped package. "I had to learn them before I could follow them."

[vanillajello]

"Actually, I told you about them and you still insisted i should be wrong," she pointed out, but dropped that subject to give the package a curious look. "Ooh. What's that?"

[therewaslife]

"...aren't you supposed to open it to find out what it is?" Bod asked, giving her a look now. "I thought that was how birthday's worked."

[vanillajello]

"Well, you think a lot of things," she retorted, teasing. "Maybe you got that one wrong?"

It was very easy to get her sidetracked today.

[The movie theater awaits! Back in a few hours.]

"I don't think so," Bod said, shaking his head. " I've been to other birthday parties where the gifts were wrapped and then unwrapped by the recipient."

[Haaaaaaaaaave fun!]

"Maybe they were doing it wrong?" Kate teased him.

Ignore how she was starting to unwrap the package.

"You're not going to be able to convince me of that," Bod said, shaking his head. "I do know how gift giving works."

[vanillajello]

"You might have gotten it wrong," she argued idly. "Puck might've been involved and -- oooh, coffee? Awesome!"

And that was entirely sincere.
