An Ice Creamery, Baltimore, Early Sunday Afternoon

Friday had been pretty spectacularly bad, and the less said about it the better. Saturday, Kate had just laid low and recuperated. And today, today was just one of those days she had to get off the island. It was just a necessity, being outside in the normal world. Not getting yelled at by vampires, not singing things that were better kept silent.

So she'd come here, to this ice cream place. She'd been happy here once, months and months ago, flirting and drawing out some of the very first of those blushes she'd later come to love so much. This was a good, non-crazy place to be spending a Sunday afternoon in.

She had a big bowl of ice cream and her laptop in front of her, and was currently busying herself with following some of Knatasha Knightblade's advice from a few weeks ago by setting up an Amoozoo wishlist for Princess Valhalla Hawkwind.

Picking out things she wanted was like therapy. She'd be here a while.

He'd gotten as far as pants but he was sure he could manage to find her.

if you want, she sent back. doubt i'll be going anywhere else too soon.

Bod shook his head. I asked if you wanted that, not me.

i have no preference, she claimed. if you stay there i can send you mushy longing texts, and if you come here i can pretend i'm not sliding my leg against yours.

I don't know if I should get dressed or not.

Those both sounded good and he'd gotten himself confused enough that he was scratching his head while standing in the middle of his room.

if you're going to come here i would suggest getting dressed.

No, that probably didn't help him make a decision. It wasn't meant to, either.

Yes, but I don't know if I should come find you or not. I've just woken up, how am I supposed to make these decisions?

His life was oh so hard.

I don't want to bother you either way so that's why I'm asking your preference.

Not bothering you isn't the same as being wanted.

i want your company, she pointed out. i just don't have any preference about how i get it today.

Bod made a face but tossed his phone on the bed so he could pull on a t-shirt and a sweater. He picked the phone up again.

I'm going to come join you. It'll take me a little bit so don't leave because I'll get lost in Baltimore.

if you found your way here and i'd already left, you'd just go back the same way you came.

Someone here had to be the logical one, if he wasn't going to be.

I'm shutting my phone off now so I can get there. Don't miss me too much.

Bod turned his phone off, pocketed it and headed out the door to try and find his way through Baltimore and to her.

Kate snorted at that message, and didn't send a reply because that would've been pointless.

Instead, she went back to finishing off her ice cream and adding a few more things to her wishlist. Eventually, though, she shut off her laptop and put it back into her bag.

And then she just sat back and waited, occasionally glancing towards the door.

It didn't take Bod that long to get there considering he walked briskly and amazingly remembered the way. He slipped inside the ice cream shoppe and immediately smiled when he saw her.

He walked over, hands in the pockets of his jeans.

Kate returned the smile as soon as she spotted him approaching. "Hey," she said. "Didn't get lost."

"I didn't. I'm surprised that I remembered but I didn't," he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek before sliding into the booth across from her. "Hullo, Kate."

"Hullo, Bod." That was getting to be a habit, borrowing his accent for that single word. Like a private joke. "Good to see you."

"I figured I should get up at some point today," he said, leaning back against the booth and stretching his legs out. "Getting out was a good idea today. It's chilly but nice."

"It's pretty good," she agreed, glancing in the direction of the nearest window. "I like days like this."

For various reasons, even.

[therewaslife]

"I like you," he said, smiling across at her. "And ice cream. I like you more, though."

[vanillajello]

"That's good," she replied, smirking at him. "'Cause I'm currently all out of ice cream."

[therewaslife]

"I see that. I think I'm going to get some for myself. Would you like anymore?" Bod asked, getting to his feet to do just that.
