An Ice Creamery, Baltimore, Early Sunday Afternoon

Friday had been pretty spectacularly bad, and the less said about it the better. Saturday, Kate had just laid low and recuperated. And today, today was just one of those days she had to get off the island. It was just a necessity, being outside in the normal world. Not getting yelled at by vampires, not singing things that were better kept silent.

So she'd come here, to this ice cream place. She'd been happy here once, months and months ago, flirting and drawing out some of the very first of those blushes she'd later come to love so much. This was a good, non-crazy place to be spending a Sunday afternoon in.

She had a big bowl of ice cream and her laptop in front of her, and was currently busying herself with following some of Knatasha Knightblade's advice from a few weeks ago by setting up an Amoozoo wishlist for Princess Valhalla Hawkwind.

Picking out things she wanted was like therapy. She'd be here a while.

Taking advantage of both the time change and his current lack of roommate, Bod was still in bed. Until just a few minutes ago, he'd been asleep but he'd woken up and was now clumsily texting something on his phone.

Mrning. His fingers were still asleep. Miss youuu.

Kate actually laughed out loud once she'd picked her phone up and read the message. Adorable.

Bod had to rub his eyes a few times to get his phone to focus and then he frowned at himself and his clumsy fingers.

No. He stretched and rolled onto his back. Just woke uppp. Sleeeepy stll.

Yes, Kate was going to get a lot of amusement and teasing out of his current lack of typing skills.

Im not lazee. He really needed to wake up and get the fogginess out of his head. The lack of typing skills were going to bother him for the rest of the year. Come bee lazy wit me?

Bod sent the text and groaned when he saw how wrong it was. He got to work on sitting up and actually making an effort to be awake.

Meanwhile, Kate leaned back in her chair, letting both computer and ice cream be for the moment while she concentrated on texting.

i think my boyfriend's phone has been stolen by the average youtube commenter.

I don't know what that is. And see, he was already doing better. That was all spelled right and everything. My phone hasn't been stolen. It's with me.

well you sound more like yourself now, she had to admit. too bad. it was kind of adorable.

I wasn't all the way awake yet, he sent, still laying in bed but a little more focused now. You don't like when I sound like myself? :(

it's not as generally adorable. but it's better in other ways.

Yes, it needed to look like that so he'd understand how much she meant it.

I am awake and all alone. Jacob went home. No wonder he'd slept so long. He hadn't heard anyone moving around or coming and going. Where are you?

There were so many things that made Leto want to act, but the path was still unclear. No, that wasn't entirely true; there was an outline, but he needed Ghani to agree. All this was a heavy burden to carry and he felt the need for distraction, so he called a person he knew could usually provide it. Having found a place where no one was likely to find him for some time - not even Ghanima - he dialled Kate's number.

And as a result, Kate almost choked on a spoonful of ice cream when she saw who was calling. She had the decendy to swallow before she actually picked the call up, but-- "Holy crap, Leto?"

Yeah. She'd probably had more eloquent ways of answering her phone in the past, but right now those were sadly not to be.

"Kate?" He sounded amused at her response. "I wasn't aware that calling would frighten you."

"Oh shut up, I'm not frightened," she replied, snickering. "I'm surprised."

He laughed. "I see. And you know why I'm calling, no doubt."

"Because you miiiiss me?"

Or that distraction stuff they used to be so good at. She was betting on the latter, but the former was more fun to say.

"Of course I do." Leto wasn't going to admit it was for completely selfish reasons. "Also, I need to make sure you're enjoying yourself properly nowadays." That wasn't meant to be interpreted in a sexual way, or rather, if it was he would deny it.

"Eh, enjoying myself kinda comes and goes." And hey, that actually worked in both sexual and non-sexual ways. "You know how it is."

[future_sandworm]

"I do know. Has Fandom offered any of its peculiar forms of entertainment lately?" he continued.

"Well, we had a singing day on Friday."

And boy did her tone ever convey how much she had not enjoyed that.

"One of those." Leto had a feeling Kate didn't want to talk about the details. "So, perhaps it was a good thing I didn't call you then," he said lightly and teasingly.

"I don't think that would've been half as bad as some of the crap that happened," Kate sighed. No, she didn't want to go into the details. "How are you, anyway?"
