Overland Park, KS, An Afternoon in May [Friday Fandom Time]

Big surprise, Kate had run away from Fandom to Overland Park again. It was starting to become a thing with her, but she didn't care, sometimes it was good to be elsewherer. She'd been here since Wednesday night – or, they had, since Bod had come along with her, but right now he was on his class-and-diner trip back to Fandom. Or getting takeout, if you looked at it from the official OP standpoint that was oblivious to portals.

And Kate? Kate was glueing lace and fake gems and sequins to headbands, because Charmaine had decided that was going to be her new business. Making tiaras and selling them on Etsy. Generally, Kate might have mocked the idea (even if she was pretty sure it came from when she'd shown off her own prom queen tiara) but right now it was just kind of nice to be working with her hands.

And when she watched Charmaine and her big belly out of the corner of her eye, she couldn't help thinking a little about Alice. Not that she got very far with those thoughts, because Char was in a chatty mood. "-- and I don't want you turning this place into a den of sin," she was saying. "With your James Bund of a gentleman caller."

Kate snorted. "What?"

"Well, you know," Charmaine said, with what Kate assumed to be her best trying-to-be-an-adult voice. "There's going to be a baby in the house in a few months. I don't want you corrupting her."

"The baby you got pregnant with while dating someone who wasn't the father?" Kate checked with an eyebrow raise. "Tell me you're joking."

Charmaine deflated. "Okay so I don't really give a rat's ass what you two get up to as long as it's in your room, I was just trying to be, y'know, assertive and and authoritative and motherly. How'd I do?"

Kate just snorted again and shook her head.

"I know," she murmured, then snickered a bit. "Did you just bite my ear to retaliate for me getting literal?"

"I did," Bod admitted with no apology at all. "Do you have a problem with that?"

"I do not," Kate informed him. "I don't have a problem with anything you've done or said in a while."

"Well, now you have me curious as to when's the last time I said something that you had a problem with," he replied, kissing her ear this time.

"I can't remember," she admitted with a quiet chuckle. "I think I was more trying to oh so subtly say I have absolutely no problem with you being here for the long run."

"Well, that's a good thing to say oh so subtly," Bod agreed and kissed her ear again. "You don't have to be subtle about it, though. I don't mind directness."

"Well, I'm a little weird so I mind not being subtle about it," Kate pointed out, turning her head a bit more towards him. "And it's not like I have any idea what the future holds beyond the summer."

"You know you're not going to university," Bod noted, stretching a bit to kiss the corner of her mouth. "Are you going to try and become employed somewhere?"

"Probably," she replied, idly. "It's not like I can just lay around the house all day. I can't see even me enjoying that for long, plus I'd never hear the end of the bitching."

"Well, you do have quite a lot of experience at a movie theatre so that's a definite start," he said and kissed her cheek this time. "You'll find something."

"And Barnabeez, and CSR," Kate filled in. "even if both of those ended up being huge disasters. Someone's bound to hire me, right?"

"You'll be fine," Bod murmured and gave her another squeeze and a nuzzle. "You're amazing and you'll do fine."

"Well I'm glad someone thinks so," she sighed. "'Cause seriously, the only good thing about things being shitty with Mitchell is that he has no time to nag at me about college."

"I think you should do whatever you're drawn to," Bod remarked quietly. "If it isn't college then you should find what it is and go do that. You should be happy."

Kate was quiet for just a moment, just soaking those words up. Yes, she should be happy. She deserved that. He thought so, so maybe she should too. "And you have no problem committing to a long-distance, long-term thing with someone with no interest in pursuing a life in academia?"

"I want to be with you no matter what you do," he said, quiet sincerity in his voice. "I'm committed no matter what. And no matter what you do, I'll still feel that way. You have to find out who you are just as much as I do. No one should take that away from you."

Kate shook her head, then strained her neck, trying to kiss one corner of his mouth. "You're impossible."

She meant that in all the positive ways.

"Mmm, I know," Bod said and smiled when she kissed him. "I love you and I'm committed. I promise."

"Good," she murmured, leaning against him again, giving one of his arms a little squeeze with her hand. "I don't know, I guess I'm a little weirded out by how... not worried I am about, you know, us. After I move back."

"You don't want to give me up, I don't want to give you up so it makes it very easy not to worry," Bod decided quietly. "You're just secure in the relationship."

"Well, that's weird for me," Kate replied with a quiet laugh. "Like, a secure relationship? What is this madness?"

[therewaslife]

"You don't think you deserve one of those?" Bod asked her, smiling. "There are some things in life that should be stable and secure. This is one of them."

"Not really a question of deserving," she mused. "I've just... never had one before. It's all new and weird, and I don't think I was expecting one."

[therewaslife]

"Well, you have one," he said and kissed her ear. "So, it can just be an unexpected good thing for you and me."

[vanillajello]

"I can deal with that," she promised, smiling to herself. "And you can keep being affectionate towards my ear."
