Overland Park, KS, Saturday Fandom Time

As requested/ordered, Kate had gone and gotten her face checked out by a doctor yesterday, and then spent the rest of the day doing absolutely nothing. Today was turning out to be much the same, except her face was sightly less sore to the touch, and she was waiting for Bod to show up after his workshift.

And while she was doing that, she was reading up on all things Osaka and Japan on the internet, and trying to learn useful phrases in Japanese. It was a quiet day in the Craine – Gregson – Kowalski household. Charmaine and Neil were downstairs, presumably reading yet another one of the dozen baby books he'd bought after the false labor fiasco. Who'd have tought he'd be the responsible one?

It was funny to think so with a still-bruised face, but maybe things were starting to look up a little bit.

"I've been trying to learn phrases," Kate grinned, as she reached for her plate. "Just, you know, basic stuff. Thank you and hello and good evening and stuff like that."

"That sounded quite good," Bod complimented, opening up the various containers of moddable Chinese food. "You'll be an expert in no time."

"Thanks, I just hope to get by," she replied, smiling a little shyly but maybe that was just because she was looking down at the food, picking and choosing things from the containers. "I mean, they say I can get by on English but it probably makes a better impression if I can be polite in Japanese, right?"

"I think the fact that you're trying will mean a lot," Bod replied, smiling. "You're going to try and make yourself a part of their culture and that's a hugely hard thing to do but you're going to try."

"Apparently I am," Kate agreed, and laughed a little at the absurdity of it. Plate filled, she padded over to the bed to take a seat next to the giant teddy bear. "This guy's gonna need a name, by the way."

Bod didn't get quite as much as Kate before he came over and sat nearby. "I'm dreadful with names. You should name him."

Kate snorted. "Like I was gonna let you name him anyway."

"That's very mean, Kate," he said but didn't mean it. "You're just lucky he didn't come pre-named."

"Like I would've cared if he had," she retorted. "I'm a maverick, I don't care if things have names before they get to me."

"So, what are you going to call him?" Bod wondered curiously. "Something as creative as the other bear?"

"Dunno, lemme take a moment to think about it," Kate shrugged, making a thinky face, though sans nose-wrinkling. "I mean, if I was mean, this'd be a perfect time to name him after all my closest male friends and see if I could make you flail about what that means. But I'm not mean so I won't."

"Why would that make me flail?" Bod wondered. "I know you have male friends."

Kate gave a little snort. "Yeah, if you didn't you'd probably have to think I barely have any friends at all." She sucked at the girl thing, apparently. "But, I mean, I'm probably gonna be cuddling that bear a lot at night. At least until I leave."

"I know you love me so I wouldn't mind," Bod said, smiling at her. In fact, there was probably only one name that she could give the bear that would make him uncomfortable and sullen and he hoped she wouldn't do that.

She smiled a bit. "Well, I think Mitchell Nathan Luke Bobby Puck Hannibal is probably still too long a name for one bear. Even a giant one like this."

"But giving a long name isn't completely without precedent," Bod pointed out. "Dorian knows that."

He did have a point there. "What, do you want me to name him after my testosterone-fueled BFFs?" she asked. "Because I totally can. Not that I'm ever gonna remember them in the same order twice."

"I'd like you to give him whatever name you'd like," Bod countered, shrugging. "I was just making sure you knew that long names aren't a new thing for you or me."

"Technically they are 'cause we didn't name Dorian," Kate pointed out. "I don't know, I think he deserves a name of his own."

Nodding, Bod said, "All right. So, think hard and find a creatively unique name for your new bear. I'm sure he'll be happy with whatever you give him."

"If we keep talking about him like he's a person," Kate laughed, "Fandom's gonna find a new way to fuck me over by making him come to life. And that would be bad."

"Or maybe he'd just be a cuddly, lovable friend," Bod suggested with a half smile. "Things like that don't always have to be bad."

Kate shook her head. "No, I think with my luck, hed be honey addicted fiend who I'd have to bribe into staying out of sight so my family doesn't freak out."

"Or you could just call me and let me take him back to the island for the duration of the oddness," Bod suggested. "He could make friends with my fish."

"How are Slim and Wadsworth doing, anyway?" Kate wondered. "They miss me terribly, right?"
