Room 324, Friday Evening

After everything that had happened over the last week, and what little had happened today, Kate was just so very glad to have a completely unrelated thing to focus on.

And right now, that thing was the thought of getting a new fake little sibling tomorrow. So, she'd been putting together a little welcome kit with some useful items. It felt a little dorky, but it was pretty fun, actually, doing that. And distracting, which was the important thing.

She'd even considered baking a batch of cookies, but then decided against it both because there'd be enough food at the welcome picnic, and she wasn't really feeling the idea of standing in the common room baking right now. She'd just offer to bake the kid something at a later date.

So now, Kate was just sprawled on her bed, making a refresher list of all the things a newbie to fair Fandom island should be told on their first day.

And she was eating chocolate. Chocolate was a good thing.

That... was probably the best she could hope for, under the circumstances. She took a deep breath, and was unfortunately not at all surprised to find it a little ragged.

"Okay."

She pushed herself up some, changing her position so she was kneeling on the bed, then turned more towards him, to pull him closer for an awkward embrace. Without really looking at him, or saying anything.

Awkward embrace or not, he went willing, arms going around and cheek pressing against hers. "I understand your concerns, Kate, I do. And I'm willing to work through them and work with them because I love you. I'm still going to be here."

"I love you," she said, clinging. "And it hurts me when you hurt because I love you."

Though she'd also tried to push him away because she loved him. She just didn't know how to act, at all.

"And you don't think I don't feel the same?" he asked, rubbing soothing circles against her back. "It hurts me when you're hurting because I love you as well. That's why I always want to do something because I don't want you to hurt."

"I know," she whispered, burying her face against his neck. "I haven't cared this much about anyone before. It's hard. And I know you're new at all this too."

"It is hard," he agreed, nodding and trying to just pull her into his lap since she'd probably end up there anyway. "A lot of the best things in life are difficult, I've found. We'll learn together. And we'll probably make more mistakes but I love you and you love me so we can get through them."

Lap? Yeah, she could do that. It was a good place to be. Good and close, and easy to keep clinging.

"Probably."

That was still better than saying maybe. And she did want to get through whatever fuck-ups they'd end up having to endure.

Once Bod had shifted enough to accommodate the new position, he just held her for a few moments, close and tight against his body.

"It's hard," he said again, nodding, "but we're doing all right, aren't we?"

"I guess." she muttered, and sighed. "This whole week has sucked so much it's not even funny."

[therewaslife]

"I know," he said and rubbed her back some more. "It hasn't been a good week but we're both still here. I think we need to relax, I really do. I know that's going to be difficult too but there's been so much going on, we need it."

He paused and kissed the top of her head. "And I mean just you and me."

"How?"

It was more a breath than a question. Her eyes were closed, had been for some time. made it easier to just be here with him.

"I don't know exactly. We can go to England," he suggested quietly, resting his cheek against her hair. "We could go camping somewhere like I've talked about. Somewhere neither of us has been and no one knows us."

"Somewhere no one knows us," she echoed. "I'd like that."

She'd done that before, but mostly on her own, and using fake names. This would probably be healthier.

"I'm sure there are small towns here and there with tiny inns that we can stay in since it's getting cooler," he suggested quietly. "We don't have to do much but eat, sleep, explore an unfamiliar area and do it all again the next day."

"And we won't even have to go too far," Kate supplied. "Maryland's pretty scenic, actually."

She really did like this idea, yes. The mental images were pleasant.

"Is it?" Well, it's not like Bod knew Maryland all that well. "That's good, then. We can take a bus up to a small town in Maryland and stay there for a few days. I'll even drink alcohol one night."

"I've been on a tiny roadtrip in Maryland once, so I've seen some of it," Kate replied, and then actually laughed. "Alcohol, really?"

"Yes," he said and laughed too. "I can drink alcohol, I've just chosen not to. Maybe you should see me get slightly intoxicated. It'd be funny, wouldn't it?"

"As long as you don't puke on me," she said. "I'm sure you're amusing when you're drunk."

"I haven't ever thrown up." Well, he hadn't and he had no reason to think he would now. "Even if I don't drink, we can still go out and find tiny places to eat and drink. We can walk everywhere and take our time and not worry about the outside world."

"I'll have to wear sensible shoes." That was a nicer thought than many of the ones she'd been having earlier, so it got out, too. "I can totally do that."

"Good," he said, pleased to hear the easier tone and inane thought from her. "I can drag you into small bookstores and you can be bored but I'd keep a hold on your hand so you can't go anywhere while I tried to read you poetry."

"I'd just drag you to the human sexuality section again," she countered with a quiet snicker, "and read at you until you're blushing too much to read."

"I would cover my ears," he countered with a quiet snicker.

"But then you'd have to let go of my hand," she pointed out. "And I could escape your little poetry reading."
