Hawi, Hawaii, Sunday Early Evening

One of the good things about living in Fandom was getting to use Portalocity. So, when an obnoxious dude happened to stumble upon incriminating videos of a dark part of your life you would have rather buried and never thought about again, and you ended up punching him in his stupid face, and then found yourself anxious to get off the island because it was making you feel pukey and bad... You could hit up Portalocity for a package deal on portals to a cottage in Hawaii.

Kate had portalled out ahead to set some stuff up in advance before Bod got there. Those things included mundane stuff like getting groceries, but also special things like a hammock fit for two between two trees in the yard. It was important to have one. Right now, it was.

And there were one or two other things as well. Since the portal was not too far from the cottage, Kate had just texted Bod the address and a picture of the building, and was waiting for him on the kitchen, wearing the dress she'd not gone to a party in not too much earlier. She was resting her elbows on the railing, and beside her there were an empty jar, and a quickly made sign that said 'KISSING BOOTH'. Because she was a dork.

A dork who really, really felt like she needed to be with her boyfriend right now.

The way Kate leaned into his touch may have suggested some need for that reassurance, too.

"Pineapple juice," she said, pointing the container out. "Also, another one with both pineapple and orange."

"Oooh, I'll try the pineapple and orange juice," Bod decided easily. "That's not a flavor combination I've had before so let's go with that."

"Okay," she nodded, reaching out to grab the juice, then another one. "As for me, I want this mango one."

Bod reached out to take the juice from her so he could carry them and then leaned in to kiss her cheek. "Shall we go to the hammock now?"

Kate glanced at the champagne bottle like she was considering something, then nodded at him. "Yes, I think we shall."

Bod followed her gaze and eyed the champagne bottle before he looked back at her. "Is that for a later occasion?'

"I... think so?" she offered, then chuckled a bit at her own indecision. "That's what I was wondering myself, actually."

"Would you like to have it now?" Bod asked, curious now. "We can. Neither of us are going anywhere right away so we could."

"But what about the special occasion?" Kate teased, using that to mask the fact that she suddenly felt a bit nervous, even if it was in a kind of a good way. "Should we have that now too?"

Bod was very, very curious about this now. And while he was never one to rush or be impatient, he couldn't help it right now.

"I think we should," he decided, "or I'm going to be coming up with scenarios in my head until we do."

"And then nothing I have planned can live up to the things you've imagined," Kate remarked with a snicker. "Okay, well, wait here while I go get something from my bag, okay?"

"Of course," Bod replied, nodding and smiling. "The juice and I will be waiting right here until you return. I won't even drink anything prematurely."

Kate snorted. "I won't be gone for long enough, anyway."

She was gone for a bit, though, going through her bag to find what she wanted. When she came back, she was holding it behind her back.

Nervous or not, she could still be a tease.

"You seem to have come back without your arms," Bod said playfully, chuckling. "Is an armless you the special occasion?"

"Clearly," she joked with a chuckle. "Don't you like it?"

[therewaslife]

"I do," Bod said, nodding very solemnly. "Despite your sudden lack of arms, I still love you and I will be your arms should you need them."

"Well, that's very nice to know, but I actually do still have my own," Kate noted. She even showed them to him, and in the process, brought her hidden object into view as well.

It was a small box. Very similar to one he's given her, not so long ago.

Bod smiled at her and when his eyes fell on the small box, the smile widened some. He didn't try to take it though. He'd wait for her to offer it.

"What's this?" he asked quietly, moving to put the juice down on the counter.

"This," she said, smiling down at the box in her hand, almost a bt shy, "is another one of those things that aren't a proposal. But a promise. Definitely a promise."

[therewaslife]

"A promise?" he asked, stepping closer to her now. "Tell me. Show me."

[vanillajello]

"A promise, that... I'm in this seriously," Kate said, softly. "That I really, really want to make things work even after I move away, and that I'm really doing my best to keep from fucking up again."

She popped the box open and held it out for him. Inside there was a silver ring, slightly domed, and engraved with the words 'CRUSTUM ANGLICUS' which... she figured wasn't even halfway correct Latin, and was kind of closer in meaning to 'Anglian pastry' than what she'd originally wanted, but it was the thought that counted, right?

And she was watching his reaction nervously right now.

If she was watching, she'd be able to see his grin widen at her words and stay that way when she opened the box. He ran a light finger over the engraving and even if the Latin wasn't completely correct, Bod knew what she'd been going for and it made him laugh.

"It's beautiful," he said quietly, sounding both awed and warm. "It's gorgeous, Kate."

"Well, good," she replied just as quietly, though grinning at him. "It's yours."

"Thank you," Bod said, not reaching for the ring just yet. Instead, he cradled one of her cheeks with his hand and just looked at her. He just looked and smiled. "Thank you."

Then, he finally did reach for the ring and slid it onto the ring finger of his left hand. He bent the finger a few times and then held it up for her to see. "Does it look all right? It's the first ring I've ever wanted to wear."

"It looks amazing." And also a lot like an engagement ring, but maybe she was going to let him deal with all of that on his own. "And so do you."

And she felt stupidly happy.
