October 1st, 2011. Kate's 18th birthday.

Again.

Also, November 1st, 2011. Bod's 18th birthday.

Interdimensional time differences were a pain in the ass, but occasionally they produced fun coincidences like a once-in-a-lifetime joint birthday, and that was why Bod had been invited over to Kansas today.

There'd been much cheer earlier from the Gregsons and their assorted posse, and there'd more family partying later, probably (in her honor, not his). But for now, the outsiders had cleared off to do other stuff, mostly to give Kate and Bod some time alone, and so alone they were, in the kitchen of Charmaine's house, with a birthday cake that was missing whatever pieces her family had already eaten. And Kate was currently adding '+ Bod' at the end of the original 'Happy Birthday Kate' in icing. "Look, I'm making you a birthday cake!"

"Enough to deal with everything," Bod said, leaning forward to kiss her nose. "Everything."

"Everything's a lot of stuff," she murmured, scrunching up her nose under that kiss. "Are you sure?"

"I'm more than sure," he murmured quietly. "More than sure."

"Mm, excellent," Kate decided, reaching up for a quick kiss. "'Cause you're not getting rid of me, ever."

"Good," he said, murmuring those words against her lips. "That's what I want."

"Then that's what you shall have," Kate whispered. "Now, is there anything else you'd like for your birthday?"

"I had nothing specific in mind," Bod answered, shaking his head. "I'm just enjoying being here with you."

"Easy," she teased. "So easy. Easy Bod. You are the opposite of difficult."

[therewaslife]

"I know I am," Bod said, shrugging, "but I like being that way and I think you like that I'm that way as well. Easy means I make things easier too. It's a fact of life."

"Yeah well I make things difficult," Kate pointed out, "so does that mean we balance each other out or something?"

[therewaslife]

"I think it does," Bod said, nodding. "I think that's exactly what it means which is good because I don't want anyone else to balance me out."

"Awww," Kate cooed. "Is it bad I'm still kind of pleasantly surprised that we work out this well together?"

"It's not bad," Bod said, shaking his head. "We worked hard to get here though so I'm not surprised. I know we work well because we worked hard."

"We did," she agreed. "And it's been worth it. Plus, my family's kind of amazed."

"I'll take that as a compliment," he said, laughing. "I like your family too."

"Well, I more meant it like they're amazed I've been keeping my shit together long enough for a stable relationship," Kate explained. "But they do adore you."

"Well, I like them and I adore their daughter/niece/sister/whatever relative you might be," he said, smiling at her. "So, that works out all around, doesn't it? It's a good thing. We're a good thing."

"We are the best damn thing ever," Kate declared smugly, then laughed a little. "So... You wanna go up to our room? I'm pretty sure we won't be bothered for like, hours."

"I'd like that," Bod said, reaching out a hand for her. "I would really like that."

"Of course you would," Kate smirked, giving his hand a squeeze as she took it. "And who knows, maybe we can test out one of your gifts."

She probably didn't mean the one he'd think she did. Or maybe she did.

"You're an evil, evil person," Bod said, using his free hand to gather up his gifts (handcuffs included). "Evil person."

"What, how?" Kate asked, laughing and tugging on his hand a bit. "For wanting to have a little fake firefly moonlighting while I innocently spend time with my boyfriend? Honestly, I can't do anything without seeming evil to you."

Or maybe she was lying.

"While you might have been thinking of using my fake firefly moonlight container, I know what else you were thinking," he said, following behind her and shaking his head. "You can't fool me, Kate Gregson."

"Is that so?" Kate asked, glancing back at him over her shoulder. "Then tell me, Nobody Owens, if you know my thought so well, what else was I thinking?"

"You want to use the...naughty present," he said and brought the handcuffs up into her view. "I know you do. You can't fool me."
