Weeping Angel A4, Friday After Classes

Kate was fighting a losing battle.

Namely, one of trying to stuff all her surprise luggage under her bed. There were just too many. They would never fit. But she just had to try. Not like she wanted them just laying around, when they had labels like Too much responsibility, Pushed around by skeevy guys and Heart bruised by Southern idiot.

And of course, that one fucking luggage set with the label Crazy mother issues.

Eventually though, she just gave up, letting a few of the bags that wouldn't fit just stay in sight. She was just going to flop down on the bed and be thankful that at least she'd been able to push that one black leather bag (which for some reason looked like an old-fashioned doctor's bag, and which had the words That one awful Saturday labelled on it) as far back under the bed as it would go.

Fucking Fandom.

She rolled her eyes, but smiled lightly. "No, it's not because you look like a deer, I promise. I just like your eyes."

"Well. Good," Bod said and blushed a bit, hiding it somewhat by looking down. Of course, the island was going to choose that time to drop a small, heavy bag behind him. When he twisted around and his eyes fell on THAT WHOLE MONSTER THING, the blushed morphed into a painful winced and he picked up the bag to drop it with his other one.

"I don't think anyone's liked my eyes before," he said, trying to force himself back into that ease he'd been feeling. It didn't work too well, though.

"Well, I'm a very observant person," Kate said, determined to hold on to the mood even if all those bags were making it hard. She didn't need to see what his latest one said to know it couldn't be anything good.

She'd seen all of hers, after all.

"And I've spent a lot of time looking at you. You have nice eyes."

"Thank you," Bod repeated, managing a smile despite still feeling a little thrown by that last bag. "I like your eyes as well. You've tricky eyes, I think. It's hard to describe what I mean by that but it's the word that fits."

"Tricky eyes?" Kate just had to ask. It was really pretty obvious that that particular statement amused her. "Think you could try to describe it anyway? I'm all curious."

"I can try, of course," Bod said, taking a minute to gather up his thoughts. "I think someone would have to look hard and to really pay attention to your eyes to see what's really going on behind them. You know how to hide things, how to shield yourself and I can see a lot of that in your eyes."

Bod bit his lip, trying to figure out if he was explaining this logically or understandably at all. "You can't always hide it all. And I like when I notice things showing through even if you don't. I like when I can tell your mood from your eyes and when I have to focus quite hard to figure out what's going on."

"Huh."

Kate had guessed something along those lines, but it was different to actually hear it. She didn't seem like she minded, though.

"I think some of that was on one of the bags," she remarked. "But you like a challenge."

It wasn't a question because it didn't need to be.

"They're good eyes to have," he said, reaching up to brush a thumb underneath one of her eyes. "I like getting to see them. And you."

Kate didn't actually say anything to that. Instead, she hid – or almost hid, anyway – a smile by looking down.

And tried to ignore the feeling that she was about to get some horrific new bag dropped on her.

Her attempts to hide her smile made him smile and he leaned a little closer to her, squeezed her hand once. "I still know what your eyes look like, even if you look down. It's getting harder to hide from me."

Her eyes flicked up to his. "You realize that saying that could easily make me freak out, right?"

But there was no venom in her voice as she asked that. Some wry amusement, maybe.

Bod shrugged a shoulder and didn't apologize. "Are you going to freak out?"

"No." Beat. "None of my bags say I'm prone to doing that."

Well, none of the ones that had shown up so far, anyway.

[therewaslife]

"Aren't you damning yourself to receiving a bag that says that or something like that now?" Bod asked, almost waiting for it to show up.

"I'm not."

Then why was there now a heart-shaped novelty bag behind her back?

"... Fuck."

She reached for the bag gingerly, but looked almost triumphant after reading what it said. And she could even show it to him. Valentine's Day 2010, it read.

"See? Nothing about freaking out."

"No, nothing about freaking out but you did receive a bag," he pointed out, peering at it and then at her. "Valentine's Day of this year? Did something happen?"

Well, if she was going to show it to him and look triumphant, he had to wonder why it was showing up as something of an issue.

"Well I spent it at a motel in Baltimore," Kate said, eyeing the bag. ...Yeeeah, actually, this bag was totally about her freaking out, wasn't it? "Think we kinda had a fight about it, even. Remember?"

"Oh. That one." Well, he remembered it now. "I didn't connect the holiday and the date. I didn't really know about Valentine's Day then."

Which was neither here nor there but seeing a bag show up for something she'd been so sure about at the time told him a few things.

"I didn't realize it was still an issue," he said as lightly as he could considering the circumstance. And the person.

"Yeah well, maybe I fucked up," she said, going for idle but not quite getting there. She let the bag fall to the floor by the bed. "I mean, it's not exactly the best holiday I've ever had."

Understatement.

"All right," he said, stopping any other questions for the moment to prevent her from getting too worked up. She had a lot to deal with and he didn't want to add his own annoying curiosity to the mix.

"I think things got a bit better, didn't they?" Well, he hoped they had even if it was only one or two things that improved.

He got a wry smile, and a tone that was weirdly fond, considering the actual words. "Well, have you seen me packing my bags for any sleazy motel getaways lately?"

Obviously, that was a yes to his question.

"I haven't but I haven't been around you at all times," he teased, smiling a bit. "Perhaps you took a trip when I wasn't looking. I wouldn't have even gotten a chance to miss you."

"That's true," she agreed, leaning a bit closer. "But I would've told you. Just to give you a chance to argue about my reasoning."

[therewaslife]

"You would tell me just to invite an argument?" he asked, sounding amused. "And you call me weird. Don't worry, I'd be thrilled to argue with you all you want, Kate. I'm always willing."

[vanillajello]

She leaned in for a quick kiss on his cheek, then said, "So I've noticed. I mean, you argued with me before we really even knew each other."
