October 1st, 2011. Kate's 18th birthday.

Again.

Also, November 1st, 2011. Bod's 18th birthday.

Interdimensional time differences were a pain in the ass, but occasionally they produced fun coincidences like a once-in-a-lifetime joint birthday, and that was why Bod had been invited over to Kansas today.

There'd been much cheer earlier from the Gregsons and their assorted posse, and there'd more family partying later, probably (in her honor, not his). But for now, the outsiders had cleared off to do other stuff, mostly to give Kate and Bod some time alone, and so alone they were, in the kitchen of Charmaine's house, with a birthday cake that was missing whatever pieces her family had already eaten. And Kate was currently adding '+ Bod' at the end of the original 'Happy Birthday Kate' in icing. "Look, I'm making you a birthday cake!"

"Silas doesn't drink at all so no, he isn't much of a bartender," he said, moving to try and embrace her. "Let's not talk about Silas today."

"I really wasn't intending to talk about him any more than that," she snorted, leaning into him. "So that's a pretty easy agreement to make. What would you rather talk about?"

"I don't know," Bod said, shrugging a shoulder. "The cake that we've been ignoring? Presents?"

"Well... How 'bout you get a slice of cake and I bring you to your presents?" Kate suggested. "Or, bring your presents to you. Either way. I'm not really picky."

[therewaslife]

"All right," Bod said, nodding and giving her one more squeeze before letting her go. "I hope you don't mind that I didn't get you anything this time. I'm sure your parents will just think I'm saving my money instead of the fact that I got you presents a months or so ago."

"Or they'll just think your presents are too dirty to be shown off around my family," she teased him with a laugh. "Don't worry, your presents were way more than enough the first time around. In fact, I think they're making my presents to you look a little cheap and lame."

"They're not cheap and lame because they're from you," Bod told her, shaking his head. "You deserve to get spoiled and the fact that you're one of the first to actually get me presents makes these that much more special."

"That just makes you easy," she snorted, but reached out to bop his nose and smiled, all the same. "So, you wanna wait while I get your gifts? You know where the plates are."

"I'll wait," he agreed, nodding and stepping towards the plates. "I'll have a giant piece of cake with my name on it and wait for you to return."

"Great," Kate nodded. "I'll be right back."

With that, she was off, heading out the kitchen and towards the stairs.

"I'll be here," Bod said, dishing a piece of cake onto a plate and getting a fork so he could start eating. "Bye bye."

Kate didn't take long. She was quick to climb the stairs, didn't take long upstairs because she only had to grab a moderately sized paper bag off their bed, then came down the stairs again.

"Hey," she called out, as she put the bag down on the living room table by the sofa, "you wanna come here?"

"Of course," Bod said, hurrying to finish his piece of cake before wandering out into the living room. He smiled when he saw her and glanced at the bag. "Hullo again."

"Hullo," she replied with a wide smile, and gestured at the sofa. "Sit down."

Bod smiled at her and took a seat, stretching his legs out as he did. "The cake was excellent, by the way."

"Thank you, I'm sure that was because of my superior icing skills," Kate joked, as she reached into the bag. "Okay, so this first one I didn't bother to wrap 'cause it was seriously cheap and lame and -- well, here."

She handed him a keychain. "I saw it when I was buying one for Luke, and if things go my way, then it won't be very accurate... But it'll still be adorably lame and it'll remind you of me."

Bod took the keychain, grinning as he did. "Someone in Overland Park loves me. I didn't have any keychains before this and I don't think any keychains will top this one. I love it. Thank you."

"You're welcome," Kate replied, with a smile. She reached for her next item. It was wrapped in paper, and shaped like a cylinder. And way heavier than a keychain. "Here you go. This is... Well, I like it."

Bod unwrapped the next gift slowly, taking care with it. When he pulled it out, he wasn't quite sure what he was looking at until he accidentally shook it and it lit up.

"Oh wow," he said, eyes widening. "Wow, that's beautiful. And amazing. How did it do that?"

"I have no fucking idea," Kate admitted with a pleased little laugh. "All I know is that it's probably better than having real fireflies in a jar. And the site said something about it being good for moonlight picnics, and I was like, 'I'm buying that'."

"We can have many moonlight picnics," he said, holding the container up close to his eyes and marveling at it lighting up like it did. "We need to have more of those."

"We do," she agreed, watching him with a gently amused expression on her face. "We totally do. Do you want the rest of your presents or are you just hypnotized by the pretty?"

"You're still prettier," Bod assured her, grinning and putting the container down so he could smile up at her. "I'm not hypnotized."

"Good reply," Kate snickered. She couldn't help smirking a bit as she pulled out a smaller present. Sort of soft, but with harder parts just underneath. "This one next," she said, handing it to him.

This was a gift she remembered threatening him with already last year. It was high time. Plus, she thought his face would be priceless.

Bod opened the newest gift and his fingers touched the soft part first so he thought perhaps it was a piece of clothing. When he actually saw what it was, his eyes widened and his mouth dropped open but no words came out.

She'd gotten her reaction.
