Kansas City, MO, Still Whatever Day It Was The Last Time

Kate was still utterly, utterly excited about having handed in her flight attendant's application. And why shouldn't she have been? It had only been like fifteen minutes! The only change was that she was on the bus on her way home now.

And as she checked her phone, she found a voicemail from Jack, and a handful of messages from Bod. The former made her raise an eyebrow because bwuh, when had she been ignoring Jack's calls, and hadn't they talked like three days ago? As for the latter, she wondered he'd managed so many texts in such short a time, but didn't even read more than the first. This was a thing that needed to be talked about so she could properly squee about it.

So, deciding to call Jack a little later, she picked Bod's number. She was pretty sure he was at work (and she was right, albeit off by two weeks reagarding the date) but whatever, she was calling him right now anyway. How busy could Luke's be?

When his phone started ringing, Bod almost ignored it. Hedn't want to talk to anyone but Kate. On a whim, he glanced at the display, saw the name and immediately picked the phone up.

His relief was probably evident in his voice when he exclaimed, "Kate! Where have you been? I've been so worried. I'm so glad to hear from you."

Kate paused, surprised. "Is everyone on drugs?" she asked. "I just texted you like fifteen minutes ago!"

"I haven't heard from you in two weeks!" Bod exclaimed breathlessly. "I was this close to coming to Kansas. I thought something had happened to you. Are you all right?"

She sounded fine but hearing and seeing her were two different things. "I want to come to Kansas. I've been so worried."

Uhh, right. Kate was just going to take a moment to blink at that.

"Wait, what?" She had such a way with words. "Yeah, uh, sure, of course, you can always come to Kansas, you know that, but what the fuck are you babbling about?"

If she hadn't known him better, she might've thought she was being Punk'd.

"I'm not babbling," Bod said, finally starting to calm down a bit. "It's been two weeks since I last heard from you, Kate. I've been so worried. I haven't been able to call you or text you. I thought something had happened and I was panicking."

He still sounded panicked, in fact.

Kate was taking her time grasping anything else except the fact that he seemed distraught. "But I was just texting you about the fl--" Wait. Wait. "Ohh, oh shit. This is some more of that... interdimensional time difference stuff!"

At this point, Bod didn't really care what it was. He cared about one thing.

"Are you all right?" he asked, closing his eyes and letting out a quiet breath.

"Yeah, of course I am," Kate assured him, frowning. "I just applied to be a flight attendant."

See, that was how fine she was!

"All right. I thought -- I thought you'd disappeared," Bod murmured into the phone, letting out another breath. "People were disappearing and when I couldn't get a hold of you, I panicked."

And he'd disappeared as well but that wasn't for now.

"Congratulations on the application."

"Thank you," Kate replied, but it lacked some of the glee that had been going with the topic for the past twenty minutes or so. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," he exhaled, nodding. "I've just been worried about you. I thought you were gone."

"I'm not gone," she murmured, glancing over at other people on the bus, no one seemed to be paying any attention to her. "I'm here. It sounds like things have been pretty shitty over there."

[therewaslife]

"It's fine now," Bod assured her, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I've just been worried."

And not dealing with it very well.

"I'm sorry to bombard you with this immediately."

"It's fine," Kate replied. "I'd rather know, you know that. This also explains why I have a seriously cranky voicemail from Jack saying I haven't been picking up his calls."

[therewaslife]

"I was just so worried," he explained quietly. "So many people disappeared so quickly and when I couldn't get a hold of you, I thought Kansas had disappeared too. When you didn't come back, I started wondering if your universe hadn't righted itself."

And started making himself ill with that thought. "I was just worried." And scared.

"Shh, I'm perfectly fine," Kate murmured into the phone. "Except for how many of my favorite panties are probably in Germany."

Just dropping that in to lighten the mood somewhat.

"Other than that I'm peachy. So... You wanna come over?"

The comment caught Bod off guard and he laughed which made some of the tension in his shoulders dissipate. He nodded into the phone before he realized she couldn't see that.

"Yes." He cleared his throat. "If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to see you."

"It's never trouble, dummy." She smiled a little bit. "I'm gonna be home in like... fifteen minutes. Any time you wanna show up is fine."

[therewaslife]

"I've a bit left here at work but after that?" Bod suggested, already feeling better. "I can bring food, if you'd like. For you and your aunt or whomever might be at the house."

"Just for me, thanks," Kate snorted. "I think Charmaine and Neil are fending fine for themselves. As is baby Cassandra."

Kate still thought that was not the best possible name.

[therewaslife]

"Just for you," he said and he would probably bring her all the food he could find just as a way to be grateful that she was still there. "I'll bring you food and I'll stay awhile."

And he'd probably cling to her so prepare yourself for that, Kate.

[And RP mirrors RL here as I must step out to get me some food too!]

Because that was a terrible fate that she needed to prepare for. Right.

"Good, I'll be there, waiting," Kate replied. "See you in a bit. I love you."

"You will see me in a bit," Bod agreed, nodding and smiling for the first time in what felt like forever. "I love you too. I'll be there soon."

Kate ended the call with a quiet mwah, then proceeded to call Jack next.

And once that, too, was done, she was at home. Charmaine and Neil were just loading their baby into the car, apparently in a desperate bid to make her sleep. Kate wished them all the best in that endeavor. Mostly because she had to live with the kid, too.

Alone in the house, she picked up a can of soda from the fridge and hung out in the living room.

It wasn't too much longer before Bod arrived, carrying several bags from the diner with him. He knocked on the door a few times, trying to keep quiet just in case the baby was asleep. Sure, he hadn't seen the car but he didn't want to assume.
