October 1st, 2011. Kate's 18th birthday.

Again.

Also, November 1st, 2011. Bod's 18th birthday.

Interdimensional time differences were a pain in the ass, but occasionally they produced fun coincidences like a once-in-a-lifetime joint birthday, and that was why Bod had been invited over to Kansas today.

There'd been much cheer earlier from the Gregsons and their assorted posse, and there'd more family partying later, probably (in her honor, not his). But for now, the outsiders had cleared off to do other stuff, mostly to give Kate and Bod some time alone, and so alone they were, in the kitchen of Charmaine's house, with a birthday cake that was missing whatever pieces her family had already eaten. And Kate was currently adding '+ Bod' at the end of the original 'Happy Birthday Kate' in icing. "Look, I'm making you a birthday cake!"

"I still need to finagle some money out of my parents, anyway," she replied, shrugging a shoulder before softly kissing his neck. "I don't have enough for the flight. We'll see how things go."

"I can help you with that, if need be," Bod offered, seeing no reason not to offer. "If you want my help, I've money to lend. I wouldn't mind either."

"Thank you," Kate sighed. "I'm short 800 bucks, so I'm gonna try with the parentals first, but I'll keep you in mind if they say no. Which I don't think they will."

Oh, Kate.

Yes, Bod wasn't exactly sure she was thinking correctly there. He figured her parents wouldn't say yes to that but he kept it to himself. He still felt some sadness about this but he pushed it down and tried not to think about it right now.

He didn't say anything because he didn't have anything else to say at the moment.

And Kate was quiet for a while, just thinking about Japan and her possible adventures and how weird it would be to be out there, alone.

Then she pulled back enough to quirk a little smile at him. "So, eighteen, hmm? Do you have any plans for this new status in life?"

"I don't, no," he admitted with a shake of his head. "I was thinking of it as just another age, honestly. Should I have plans?"

"No," she assured him. "I mean, you could have, if you wanted to. But it's not mandatory, you can just keep... winging it, like you have."

[therewaslife]

"It seems like that would be the easiest thing to do," Bod decided, nodding. "I don't have any plans and I don't feel all that different either. I don't feel older. I'm more glad to be here than to be having a birthday."

"Well that's good, because here, you're technically not having a birthday," kate pointed out with a chuckle. "Here this day's allll about moi."

"Don't you think that about everyday?" Bod asked, teasing. "I'm fairly sure you do."

[And I go to woooork!]

"Well, yeah." There was no point n denying that. Especially when you could be all adorably smug about it. "But this is the day where my environment actually supports the notion! I mean, for example, this is the day that made me finally get some booze out of Eric, even if that was yesterday."

"Why did it make you get alcohol out of Eric?" Bod asked curiously. "Isn't that more a twenty first birthday sort of thing?"

Kate nodded. "Generally, yes. Also, the Devil's Nest has a pretty damn strict policy against under-21 drinking." She sounded a little gleeful about that, but then she had always liked people breaking rules for her. "So I guess I'm just that special for turning eighteen twice."

"And you're not letting that go to your head at all," Bod joked, leaning forward to kiss said head (or forehead, in this case).

"Of course not," Kate claimed, not even trying to make it sound believable. She closed her eyes and smiled. "I'm sure people turn eighteen twice and have thousand-year-old vampires mixing them drinks all the time."

"Well, I, personally, have never had that happen," he said and tried to sound sad about that. "I guess I just haven't yet lived fully."

"Well, Silas doesn't look like much of a bartender, anyway," Kate quipped. "Maybe you're better off as you are."

[therewaslife]

"Silas doesn't drink at all so no, he isn't much of a bartender," he said, moving to try and embrace her. "Let's not talk about Silas today."

"I really wasn't intending to talk about him any more than that," she snorted, leaning into him. "So that's a pretty easy agreement to make. What would you rather talk about?"

"I don't know," Bod said, shrugging a shoulder. "The cake that we've been ignoring? Presents?"

"Well... How 'bout you get a slice of cake and I bring you to your presents?" Kate suggested. "Or, bring your presents to you. Either way. I'm not really picky."

[therewaslife]

"All right," Bod said, nodding and giving her one more squeeze before letting her go. "I hope you don't mind that I didn't get you anything this time. I'm sure your parents will just think I'm saving my money instead of the fact that I got you presents a months or so ago."

"Or they'll just think your presents are too dirty to be shown off around my family," she teased him with a laugh. "Don't worry, your presents were way more than enough the first time around. In fact, I think they're making my presents to you look a little cheap and lame."

[therewaslife]

"They're not cheap and lame because they're from you," Bod told her, shaking his head. "You deserve to get spoiled and the fact that you're one of the first to actually get me presents makes these that much more special."

"That just makes you easy," she snorted, but reached out to bop his nose and smiled, all the same. "So, you wanna wait while I get your gifts? You know where the plates are."
