Somewhere in Maryland, Friday Evening

So, Kate and Bod had decided to get the hell off the island and away from the constant rain of future Japan. They'd packed some stuff, rented a car, and off they'd gone.

They were... somewhere in Maryland, now. Kate wasn't exactly sure where, and didn't particularly care, though maybe she should have, since she was currently driving and all. Maybe they'd know where they were going once they saw it.

She glanced over at Bod. "Can you try and find something good on the radio?" She was still too much of an old lady driver to start fiddling with the car stereo while they were in motion.

"Of course," he replied, leaning forward to turn the radio on. "Is there anything in particular you'd like to listen to? A driving music preference?"

"No country," Kate replied immediately. "I can deal with classical but would prefer something else."

Bod snickered and scanned the channels until he came across a station that sounded like it played easy listening or, at least, something that wasn't country or classical. It might have been an oldies station.

Bod glanced over at Kate for her approval.

"Nah," she said, shrugging a shoulder and making a slight face. "Keep going."

Bod laughed again and kept looking for another station. This time, he stopped on what might have been a hip hop station. The music was certainly faster paced and different.

"This?" he asked, looking over at her.

Kate laughed, glancing over. "I'm a skinny white girl from Kansas." And picky as hell. "No."

So picky. Bod laughed again and kept trying to find a radio station. He landed on another that sounded like it might have been alternative music. There were guitars and drums, definitely.

"And the verdict is...?"

[vanillajello]

Kate paused to listen for a bit. "Okay, this one I do like," she decided then, because she was a hipster like that. "This one can stay. Thank you."

"You're welcome," he said, sitting back and stretching out his legs. "I didn't realize you were quite so choosy about your driving music. The wrong type might distract you?"

[vanillajello]

"I'm choosy about music, period," Kate replied with a laugh. "It's just not while driving although yeah, I think some horrid piece of country could distract me into a ditch."

"And we wouldn't want that," Bod agreed with a nod, "especially when we don't even know where we're going. Should we have thought about that before leaving?"

"Probably," Kate admitted, though she sounded amused. "But it wouldn't be as much of an adventure if we had."

[therewaslife]

"At least we can't get lost," Bod mused, smiling over at her, "because we have no destination so there's no way to get lost. Though, if we end up on the west coast, I might be concerned."

[vanillajello]

"Well, I would be too," she replied with a quick glance his way. "And I'd blame a stray portal for it. So, actually, that could happen, I guess."

"But hopefully it doesn't," Bod said, glancing out at the passing landscape. "Is this the first time you've driven in awhile?"

[vanillajello]

She gave a snort of amusement. "Have you seen me cruising around the vast highways of Fandom lately?"

[therewaslife]

"I haven't but you've been home a time or two," Bod pointed out, shrugging. "You drive well. We haven't driven into a ditch or gotten pulled over by the police. I think we're doing well."

[vanillajello]

"Why thank you." It was... about half sincere. "Last time I was on a roadtrip we almost got pulled over by the police. But I wasn't driving."

[therewaslife]

"Oh?" Bod didn't remember this story. "Who was driving?"

[vanillajello]

"Leto." She would've rolled her eyes if she hadn't needed to keep them on the road. "Turns out it's not a good idea to let desert princes drive, even if they claim they know how. He liked to go fast."

[therewaslife]

"What's wrong with going fast?" Bod asked, amused. "I would have thought you would have liked that. You like fast in other things."

[vanillajello]

"Not so much when it attracts attention from the police." A beat. "Even less when it's used to flee from the police."

That had been one fun trip. Really.

[therewaslife]

"...what?" Bod asked, eyes widening some. "You...ran from the police? Oh, Kate." Please tell me there's no warrant out for you somewhere."

[vanillajello]

"No." This time she did roll her eyes. "The Fremen speedfreak was speedy enough. Of course it wasn't much later that he crashed the car, but..."

Really fun trip.

"Why did you continue to let him drive after the police chase?" Bod wondered. "I would have thought you'd smack him and make him pull over."
