Kansas City, MO, Friday Evening

Kate had had long-ass day at work, and somehow she'd managed to be in the dark about the news throughout the day. Not so much now that she was at home, though. Nope. News illumination! That was totally a thing. And so was calling her little brother on the east coast.

Except he didn't pick up, of course he didn't, he was probably out having a party with his art school friends. Or possibly at some café talking about the pointlessness of the marriage institution. It was hard to know with the artsy types. She noted that in the rambly voicemail she left him. Among many other equally rambly things.

Then she danced around the living room for a bit. When Seamus barked excitedly up at her, she picked him up and danced with him in her arms for a bit. She'd had a long day. If there was something to gain happiness from, she'd take it.

Overland Park, KS, Christmas Day 2011, Sunday FT

It was Christmas Day, fucking finally. It even felt like it: there had been some pretty impressive snowfall earlier in the week, so it was a seriously white Christmas, and Kate had really done her best to get the house looking Christmassy (and less creepily than when Grandma Sandy had been around some months before). The living room looked postcard perfect, with the tree in the corner and other decorations all around.

There'd been some Skypeing with Boston, earlier, and even the parentals had been pretty impressed with how things looked, when Kate had insisted on carrying her laptop around for a webcam tour. They were alone again now, though. Moosh was in the kitchen, putting finishing touches on what he had deemed gift-giving snacks, while Kate, in her adorable/ridiculous bear dress, was sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, a camera in her hands. Because a lot of these things just called for being immortalized as pixels.

She looked pretty happy. And sort of bouncy, even though she was sitting down.

"Sorry if I'm all hyper or whatever. I kinda always eat too much sugar over the holidays."

Overland Park, KS, Monday FT

It was Sunday morning in Overland Park, even if many a person inside this particular house on Oak Avenue thought it was actually Monday morning. They could probably all agree that it was morning, though. And maybe that last night had been fun.

And as far as their darling hostess was concerned, it had been a success. Kate was thrilled that people had shown up, even if it hadn't stopped being weird to see them all actually in her house. In Kansas. It was trippy, and not just because she'd gotten a little tipsy over the course of the evening. But it had made her so damn happy, and she would have probably tried insisting on staying up all night if Bod hadn't half carried her to bed after she'd started nodding off on the couch.

Things had eventually quieted down, yes, and a comfortable place to sleep had been found for all those who'd stayed over, whether in beds or on mattresses hauled over from the house next door. And now it was morning. Kate was still completely out of it, upstairs in her and Bod's bedroom (formerly her parents' room), of course, but the smell of coffee and crisp bacon was already drifting through the house. And that could only mean one thing:

Marshall was a good person.

[wee ocd up!]

Party!!!, Overland Park, KS, Sunday FT

Yesterday, Charmaine and Neil had gotten married in a tiny municipal wedding ceremony that had somehow been better for everyone than Charmaine's previous attempt at a marriage. And early today, the newly wedded couple, along with their infant daughter, had taken off for Houston to go househunting. And Kate was already feeling weird that it was really just her and Marshall and Bod around, now.

So it was a good thing this was the day she'd invited people to come visit. Some booze had been acquired, and Marshall had busied himself in the kitchen making snacks, and they were all set. It was going to be weird since Kate had invited a bunch of people who'd never been to Kansas before, but she was hoping it would be a fun kind of weird.

[Minor OCD coming up! And like I said in the invite, come one and all!]

Overland Park, KS, Tuesday FT

It was the first day of the rest of their lives.

Okay, so maybe that a little overly dramatic, but Kate was pretty much feeling like that. It was still morning, but Tara and Max had more or less packed all their stuff in the truck already. Max was just fetching the last few of the bags now.

They were all gathered in the front yard: Charmaine with Wheels in her arms, Neil, Bod, Kate, and Marshall. And Tara, of course, fussing with some of her bags before the goodbyes.

Kate looked like she was going to cry, but then she'd been looking like that all morning.

And so Tara is sent on her way. )

All things, including emotional turmoil, calmed down eventually. By the afternoon, tears had dried, Charmaine and Neil had taken Wheels to the park, and Marshall had gone for a walk. Only Kate and Bod remained.

Standing in her parents' kitchen – her kitchen now? – Kate glanced around, sighed, and wondered when she should start moving her crap over from next door.

Overland Park, KS, Monday Morning FT

This week had been far too intense. Kate could tell by how long it took her to put the pieces of all of it together after waking up. Bryce had attacked her brother. Her aunt and uncle and cousin were moving away. Her mom was going away for three months.

It was a lot of new information.

But at least she and Bod were back in their own bed, and had already been the previous night. No Bryce meant no more barricades. Even Marshall had been sleeping in his room again, even if it still had Bryce's handiwork all over it. You couldn't really say things were back to normal.

With a sigh, Kate picked up her head off Bod's chest, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. Lots to do today, but she didn't feel particularly awake.

Wake up. )

Time in Kansas was dragging on and things weren't getting any easier. Sure, Bryce had finally gone the fuck away (for the moment at least) but what he'd left behind was just more turmoil and disarray. It would probably have pleased him.

Overland Park, KS, Monday FT

It had been a few days since Kate had been back home. It had been about a week where she'd been, mostly hanging out with Bod, waiting for the call that she knew would come. Her dad rallying the troops. Marshall was staying with their Grandma Sandy, and Kate was sure he was expecting the same.

The call had come today, so... Here Kate was, walking into the Gregson house again, bag over her shoulder and wearing a yellow sweater with the face of a polar bear on the front of it. She'd bought it while she'd been away. If you liked reading into things, there could have been symbolism there. Or maybe she just liked bright colors and bear motifs.

Art and other things. )

Overland Park, KS, The Day That Wouldn't End, Wednesday FT

Kate would've almost been glad to know her day was taking for-fucking-ever So, to recap: Last night, crab and Bryce. This morning: worrying methods of dealing, and being glad to go to work, even if that meant dropping Luke off at the Portalocity hub at the Airport. She really should've expected the day to continue on as not-good as possible. See, she was in Tulsa, yet again, when she got the call. It was Charmaine.

To and in St. Louis, Friday FT

Man, was it ever fun to be one of the attendants on a flight where members of your family were among the passengers. Especially when it was your dad who was totally having super major flight anxiety and ranting to your brother a little too loudly and battling with his seatbelt.

Kate had to stride down to isle to where Marshall and Max were sitting. "Sir, calm down," she told her dad, in her best polite flight attendant voice, silently thankful she didn't need to watch over them on their connecting flight to New York for the film festival. Max looked a sweaty mess. "You're making the other passengers shit themselves."

Mon-- Monty! Monty! Monty. Monty. Monty. Monty. Monty. )

She pressed the call button and hoped Luke would save her from the boy monster for at least a moment.

Kansas City, MO, The Next Day

Yup, time was still playing tricks. Not that Kate had noticed yet, but it had been two days in Fandom while it had been just the one for her. Meaning, she was only getting home just now. Well, not home. Metcalf Bar & Grill, actually. The setting for her dad's birthday party. It was already evening by the time Kate and Evan got there. It had been a long ride. Fun, too, though. Evan was good company. Easy to talk to, not that they'd talked about anything of much worth. She was saving that for other people.

Once they pulled up to the bar, she picked up her various candy wrappers and empty cups from his car, her travel carnage. He called her a slob and they both laughed. "This was ridiculously fun," she said, which gained a nod from him. "Thank you for the ride, and thank you for stopping every 30 minutes for my microbladder." Evan smiled at her. "Yeah, of course, yeah, anytime. Thanks for the company. And I'll see you in two weeks. Eight AM to Springfield."

"Bright and early," Kate agreed, moving to get out of the car, wrangling her bag to follow along with her. Evan checked if she needed help but she was fine without any. "Okay, bye." With a little wave, she made her way to the bar. Inside, she ditched her bag by the door. The party was in full swing, with lots and lots of people and colored lights and her dad on the stage up front, with his guitar (Chastity Stargazer, it was called) and his band. And was he –– he was totally rocking some guyliner! Kate waved at him, excitedly.

"Katie-Kate, you made it!" he called back to her. Her mother was equally welcoming, giving her a big hug as soon as they came across one another. Charmaine did the same. Marshall and his boyfriend thing were all smiles too, when Kate ended up next to them.

"Hey, thanks for coming down, everybody," her dad called from the stage. "It's good to be back on stage with the Beaverlamp boys! I want to dedicate this first song to my beautiful and amazing wife, Tara."

It looked like it was actually going to be a good night.

KCMO & Overland Park, Later Friday Fandom Time

After shuffling Bod off to the Portalocity terminal, Kate was left alone, waiting for her flight. The loudspeakers above droned on about smoking and solicitations in the terminal building being prohibited, but she wasn't listening. She could barely sit still in her seat. Staying quiet was impossible.

So she turned to the random guy next to her. "Where are you headed?"

"Business in Chicago," he said, barely glancing up from his laptop. "By way of St. Louis."

"St. Louis?" Kate repeated, her already wide smile getting wider. "Me too. Same flight. St. Louis to San Fransisco, San Fransisco to Osaka... Osaka, Japan."

The man nodded a few times, said a polite 'oh', then went back to whatever it was he'd been doing. Too bad Kate was really too hyper to take a hint right now. "You know, Osaka is a lot like Chicago," she said. "It's a real economic juggernaut. Two and a half million people live there, and in the morning, another million commute there for work. Melts the mind, don't it?" She grinned and took another sip of her iced coffee. "I'm going there to teach English."

"That's something."

Blah blah blah; disaster strikes. )

2011-11-11 12:27 am

Overland Park, KS, A Weekday in October (Thursday Fandom Time)

After her bit of texting with Luke, Kate had taken Hubbard's old red Cadillac and gone off to meet the prospective buyer. While the guy had been a little apprehensive about the fact that Kate had no paperwork with her, in the end the meeting had been a success (though Kate was willing to attributing that to her flattering clothes and dashing smile, along with the reasonable price she'd asked for the car), and afterwards she'd spent a while counting the money and celebrating the sale with her brother over some coffee.

They'd inevitably gotten to talking about her plan. Obviously, she was still going ahead with it, even without their parents' monetary help: she was 18, they couldn't stop her if she paid her own way. But it still made her feel a bit bad that she didn't have their support. Especially her mom's since Kate had seen how proud and happy and strong Tara was feeling over going back to school, and how supportive everyone was of her. She wanted some of that for herself, and didn't get why she wasn't getting it. So, she'd asked Marshall.

"Why are you asking me?" he'd retorted. "What am I, the fucking Buddha? Go talk to Mom."

So, she does. Or tries to. It doesn't go all that well. )

Kansas City, MO, Thursday (Late September)

So, while there were minor parts of this week that had been mildly depressing, today Kate was pretty excited because her first post-high school job interview was finally here. In preparation, she'd finally had her hair trimmed a bit from the overgrown hippie mess that it had turned into over her time in Fandom (though not as much as to completely lose her pseudo-bohemian charm) and she'd put a lot of thought into her outfit. The job was for a fucking fashion magazine, after all! She had to dress to impress. And she was pretty pleased with the end result, too, thinking it a pretty neat ensemble in appropriate fall colors. Cute but professional. That was the aim.

And she was practically on fire at the interview proper. Bubbling with energy. "And this is what's refreshing about me," she declared. "I am the only person that you are gonna meet here today who isn't lying on her resumé. What's the point? Yeah, I didn't go to college. Yeah, my high school transcript reads a little weird. Yeah, I worked at Barnabeez on Shawnee Mission Parkway and had to sue for sexual harassment, but that was only because my boss was insane!"

She gave only half a second's thought to whether she'd grinned a little too widely during that last bit. No matter, she pressed straight on, leaning forwards toward the interviewer, a thirty-something guy who... really did not look cool enough for a fashion magazine, but she'd deal. "This is what you get with me," she said, and emphasized her points with her hands. "I am smart. I am dedicated. I could write about fashion." She leaned back again, as relaxed as she could pretend to be. "I could write the hell out of this magazine."

At least the guy was smiling, though he had a correction to make. "This isn't a writer's position," he said. "It's... administrative."

Oh. "But I could get there, is what I'm saying," Kate replied, recovering quickly. "This is who I am," she added, smiling. "I'm telling you everything. You can trust me to do a good job because this is me!"

Is this also you? )

"I'm gonna go out and get some air," Kate told the others. "Meet me out front, okay?" She didn't stay and listen to any comments or objections. She really did want some fresh air. This day was utterly, utterly fired, and she didn't want to spend another minute around the sights and smells that made her remember things she'd rather not. She'd had enough of that already.

Once outside, she turned her cellphone back on, then scrolled absently through her contact list. Was any of this something to report to the world? Maybe not.

Overland Park, KS, Friday Afternoon (August)

The last weekend was still weighing on Kate, just a little bit. She figured that was unavoidable after you got pretend killed, but she'd been trying to keep herself occupied and distracted because it was probably for the best if she didn't think about it too hard.

This weekend was going to be better, though. Or at least that was the plan she was clinging to. She hadn't told anyone but Charmaine that she had a friend coming over, so she figured her whole family knew by now, because Char was not the greatest at not blabbing. Not that it was any major secret, Kate just would've preferred it if her family hadn't been likely to flock to be curious about her elusive Fandom friends.

But that was for later. As it got to be the afternoon, she wandered out of the house and down the street to where the portal tended to dump its transportees, and kept an eye on the houses nearby in case any neighbors decided to wander outside.

Oak Avenue had its fair share of weird without adding portal sightings to the mix.

Overland Park, KS, Sunday Afternoon (Late July)

It was the last day of July, and a sunny Sunday afternoon in Overland Park. Tara had wanted to throw a party in the Gregsons' backyard for the end of summer and the return of her daughter and every good thing she could think of, and so it had come to pass. There was food, and people (some neighbors, some friends from a little further off, and Bod who'd already shown up last night), and a karaoke machine set up under the arch that had been prettying up the back yard ever since Charmaine had failed to get married, earlier in the year.

Everything was pretty perfect. All that was missing was the hostess, though, because no one actually knew where Tara was, but... They were sadly used to that. So, Max was grilling, Charmaine and her belly were off to the side having a Diet Coke she shouldn't have been drinking, Ted was mingling with some people, and Lionel was filming Kate and Marshall.

And the aforementioned Gregson siblings? Were singing their hearts out, doing an enthusiastic karaoke version of Mmmbop. They looked to be enjoying themselves.

It was looking to be a good day on Oak Avenue.

Room 324, Monday Afternoon

It was official: Kate absolutely hated dealing with interdimensional time differences. Hated, hated, hated. No, seriously. Yesterday, she'd set her brother to work on figuring out a schedule for his graduation visit, and he'd called her back today (a few hours later, his time), and they'd still had to spend the better part of an hour trying to finalize something of a plan. It was a frigging nightmare. She'd almost given up entirely, especially after she'd started getting a headache from trying to understand how their worlds could have been going at different speeds and they could still be having a normal phone conversation.

But somehow, they'd finally done it, and Kate had hung up and sighed and was now sorting through a pile of fresh laundry. She'd washed a bunch of clothes last week and never gotten around to actually putting them away. Might as well do it now.

It was helping her get a little less pissed off at stupid things like the multiverse.

[ooc: Door and post are open!]
vanillajello: (Of course it went like this.)
2011-03-27 09:24 pm

Overland Park, KS, Sunday Afternoon

So, basically, Kate's general stance on weddings wasn't getting any better than it had been previously. The whole Zach deal had left her feeling a little confused, she couldn't have cared less about the guests (only two of whom were actually Nicks' relations; his parents, sitting near the front, looking stiff and uncomfortable), Tara had been seeming stressed about having to deal with her parents, the notorious Frank and Bev Craine, the former of which kept thinking Kate's name was Patricia and only remembered half the time that this was Charmaine's wedding, not her graduation.

Everything still looked beautiful, though. Their surroundings still looked like something far more grand than a lame backyard in a Kansas suburb, and Nick was still Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome, standing at the makeshift altar beside the priest as the ceremony was starting. Maybe Charmaine would actually get her fairytale.

And then it turns into your usual Gregson/Craine affair. )

Overland Park, KS, Sunday Noon

Kate was packing. Not everything, of course. Not even the stuff she wanted to take with her. For now, she was packing the things she didn't intend to take with her. Everything that looked childish was going in the cardboard box on her bed and she was happy to do it. They'd been around too long already. Just like she had.

Tomorrow, she and Zach were intending to go see an apartment Kate was already enamored with, and there was a good chance they'd get it on the spot. It seemed amazing, from the pictures and description online, and it had wiped out any and all doubts she may or may not have had about this whole thing. In her head it was already the next weekend, and she had a place of her very own, away from the Gregson house on Oak Avenue, away from Fandom.

And that called for some sacrifices.

"Bye bye, froggy alarm clock," Kate told the green object in her hands, pushing out her lower lip at it to show how utterly unfortunate it was that they had to part. "There is no lilypad for you at my new topfloor penthouse suite." And she couldn't help but grin at those three words as she shoved the clock in the box. "I love the way that sounds." She struck an effortless little pose, something she thought looked classy and suite-like, before picking up a pile of books and putting those in the box as well. "Topfloor penthouse suite, please."

Under this cut: everyone who's hated Zach go \o/ and Kate has a Crowning Moment of Awesome. )
